I am currently in my 4th year at the University of Birmingham studying Mechanical Engineering. My 4th year is in industry at Air Products. I chose to study Mechanical Engineering to bring together my love of science and maths. Spending a summer and now a year working at Air Products gave me a great opportunity to apply my university modules in a global company with wide-ranging projects.
My current role is in Machinery engineering based in Hersham. This role deals with the purchase of equipment ranging from compressors to heat exchangers. My role involves specifying equipment, completing inspections of equipment, and much more. Not only does my role have theoretical work involving calculation tools but also hands-on visits to customer and Air Product sites.
The huge variety of work I undertake is enjoyable. No two days are the same at Air Products. One day you may be on site supervising the installation of a blower and the next reviewing commissioning tasks for large compressors. I would say the best aspect is the helpfulness and willingness of Air Products. All the engineers are happy to talk to you about not only theories but also the real-life issues that can arise with equipment.
My advice is to be open-minded and willing to learn. Air Products has a huge variety of work and you can learn so much from them.
My goals for the future are to complete my 5th year at university and hopefully be invited back to Air Products. Having the year with Air Products will bring a practical aspect to my final year studies.
