Cummins are now recruiting for our 2020 intake of 12 month placements in the UK, which provide a meaningful opportunity for university students to accomplish real-world projects in a professional environment.

The successful candidate will work within the Electrified Power Business Unit at the Milton Keynes Battery Technical Centre. The role provides opportunity to participate within teams of engineers and technicians supporting research and development into Li-ion cell battery technology.

This opportunity applies knowledge of engineering principles and design practices to create optimised design concepts and mechanical design specifications considering application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability. This role effectively communicates the capability of a design concept to meet cross-functional requirements (including assessment of alternative and competitive design concepts) and works effectively across cross-functional disciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements, including those required to resolve product issues.

The student will apply and support the execution of processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist and Design Review. The student will also utilise tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO and ANSYS Workbench and will be required to contribute towards high quality component and subsystem-level design decision making and design refinement.

We will look forward to the student providing input and negotiating with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior-level designers. They will communicate the component and subsystem design intent through a thorough Design Review package to the Product Preceding Technology, (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) team requiring a such holistic assessment of various design concepts.

The role also allows for ownership of problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with a greater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity with greater accountability to the project team. The student will also have the opportunity to provide independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge and engaging with the improvement of systems and processes.

Qualifications

We are looking for a student with an interest in electrification and Li-ion batteries, who is studying for a technical degree in any of the following fields:

  • Software Engineering
  • Design Engineering
  • Electrical/Mechanical Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Other Science/Engineering Degrees are also considered.

During the placement a mentor will be provided and they will provide regular coaching throughout the 12 months. The role will also work closely with other engineers. Safe working and protocol familiarisation training will be provided. Access to, and training in, the use of industry standard.
