We are looking for an enthusiastic Placement - Applied Mechanics Engineer to join our team specializing in assessing the durability of components, systems and products for our Power Systems Business Segment in Daventry. During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organization operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry and power your potential!

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Responsible for assessing the durability of our components, systems and products to ensure they are fit for use by the end customer.

  • Measure what happens in engine test cells and in the field: whether up a mountain, inside a shipping container, or at a power station, we are responsible for proving how much engine blocks bend, crankshafts twist, and gensets shake.
  • Using servo hydraulic test frames, electromagnetic shakers, motor driven rigs and advanced telemetry the UK Applied Mechanics department define the durability of components and systems used on Cummins power systems.
  • As a placement student in the department you have access to our state of the art test facilities and opportunity to design your own tests with guidance from our team of experienced engineers. With the support of subject matter experts you will choose from instrumentation such as strain gauges, accelerometers, laser vibrometers and motion amplification cameras to best demonstrate the physics under test.
  • Working as part of a global function you will communicate your test conclusions to colleagues around the world, developing your communication skills and team working abilities
  • You will deepen your skills in engineering mechanics, digital signal processing, CAD, practical instrumentation and rig building

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Studying towards a Degree in Engineering or equivalent related STEM degree discipline (including Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry).
  • Has experience in, and can demonstrate, relevant examples of Cummins core values e.g. voluntary work, community involvement activities, working with disadvantaged groups, charity related support, delivering outstanding results, teamwork, capabilities and outside education experiences.
  • Has clear thought processes and can show a reasonable approach to tasks, challenges, hobbies etc.
  • Able to work with other engineering and cross-functional disciplines to resolve product issues and able to participate as a team member and constantly contributes towards team goal.
