Imaging Scientist Intern

MESci in Geophysics, University of Liverpool

I studied an integrated masters (MESci) in Geophysics at the University of Liverpool, with a year abroad studying at the University of Calgary in my third year. I decided to study geophysics at university having studied geology, physics and maths at A-level, so it seemed intuitive to follow that path. The idea of being able to see the unseen (subsurface) using geophysical techniques seemed very attractive to me, and is why I seek to pursue a career in geophysics.

Last summer I worked as an imaging scientist intern at CGG’s Crawley office for 8 weeks. During this time my main focus was to help develop a fast track wave equation migration (WEM) deliverable, with minimal pre-imaging signal processing. Often fast track methods are used to give interpreters an initial image of the earth to work with before the final image is ready. This was implemented by regularisation of shot and receiver positions followed by One-way WEM. Regularisation helps to organise shot and receivers onto a regular grid which is critical for correct imaging, especially for regions with strong ocean currents that influence the positions of the streamers complicating the acquisition geometry. Wave equation based migration techniques use finite difference methods to simulate up and down-going wavefields providing high resolution images of the subsurface. WEM is known to be particularly good for migrating areas with complex geology enabling steep dips to be accurately mapped. Despite coming across many new imaging and processing techniques for the very first time, CGG provides a plethora of technical resources that can be easily accessed as well as excellent on-the-job training so I had few problems getting up to speed.

Throughout the internship I found the work to be both stimulating and challenging, and I felt that I was genuinely contributing to the project giving me a strong sense of purpose. Another benefit of the internship was it allowed me to develop my technical presentation skills, having delivered multiple presentations to fellow colleagues and one time even presenting to a client. Apart from work itself, CGG offer a range of social and well-being activities, such as 5-a-side football during Friday lunches which I enjoyed greatly! Overall CGG provides a fantastic work-life balance for its employees, and the Crawley office itself is located conveniently with easy access to London and Brighton.

Having completed my internship I was made a job offer as an imaging geophysicist, starting once I had completed my final year of study. During my final year of study I became a campus ambassador for CGG. This job involved representing CGG at university careers fairs, additionally providing feedback reports on how to grow the CGG brand and encourage prospective students to apply to our graduate opportunities. I enjoyed working as campus ambassador especially due to the work being very flexible, hence easily fitting my master's studies around it.
