Sustainability

Atos is fully aware of its responsibility to the planet and strives to be an environmental pioneer in the digital sector.

Atos contributes to a more decarbonised and sustainable world by reducing and offsetting its own carbon emissions (Atos carbon operational perimeter) and promoting digital solutions to support its clients and partners in their own decarbonisation journeys.

Atos’ environmental program was launched in 2008. A large number of policies, processes, guidelines and action plans have been in place for several years to achieve the emission reductions needed to fight climate change. Between 2019 and 2021, the Group’s carbon emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) decreased by 27%, reaching 2.406 M tCO2e in absolute.

This evolution is fully in line with the Group’s commitments to achieve a 50% reduction by 2025. Atos has aligned its objectives to the Science-Based Target initiative new Net-Zero Standard considering the new criteria applicable to both its near-term and long-term reduction targets and its net-zero target.

In 2021, Atos participated in COP26, underlining the pivotal role of digital innovation in the fight against climate change where it presented its innovative data platforms, Terra² and MyCO2Compass, to help drive the net-zero transformation of its clients. Atos also placed its first sustainability-linked bond which supports its Sustainability Performance Target (SPT) to reduce Atos’ annual GHG emissions (Scopes 1, 2 & 3) by 50% by 2025 compared to 2019.

Our environmental journey

Our environmental program began in 2008 and we became one of the first digital companies to offset the carbon emissions of our datacenters in 2014. Our program has significantly reduced our carbon footprint, meeting the most demanding scientific objectives of the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) to keep global warming at 1.5 °C.

2008

Atos launches its Environmental Program and focuses on climate emergency

2014

All Atos’ main sites must enter the ISO 14001 certification process and get certified

2015

Climate change commitments are made by Atos as part of the Paris Agreement1

2016

Atos’ CO2 reduction targets are now part of the Group’s 3-year Strategic Plans

2017

The SBT initiative validates Atos’ carbon intensity target for 2050 (-86% versus 2012)

2018

Atos’ absolute CO2e emissions are reduced by 50% between 2012 and 2018

2019

Atos offset 100% of its carbon operational perimeter 50/50 carbon capture and wind-farms projects

2020

Atos commits to the 1.5°C SBT by 2025 and to reach Net Zero emissions by 2035

2021

Atos commits to Net Zero emissions as early as 2028 (i.e. 22 years ahead of the Paris COP 21 Agreement)

2022

Atos confirms its commitment to reduce its emissions by 50% between 2019 and 2025 and by 90% by 2039 at the latest (11 years before the SBTi recommendation).
