What you'll be doing

Learn about technologies and systems for TV, radio and digital channels, and how they produce high-quality content that’s distributed around the world. And learn the industry standards for the set-up of broadcast communication systems, media content systems and IP networks.

Develop the specialised skills to design, build and maintain the media production and broadcasting technologies and systems that take the BBC into the future.

An insight into degree apprenticeships

Due to technical difficulties, India isn't visible in the recording of this clip. However, we were luckily still able to hear about the degree apprenticeship she is doing at Birmingham City University. To watch the full Gradcracker/BBC webinar, click here.

You'll study for your L6 Broadcast Engineer Degree Apprenticeship qualification, from Birmingham City University and The Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education. You will study IP Networks, Audio and Vision Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Uni and have opportunities through workplace rotations, to put this learning into use practically.

What we're looking for

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be aged 18 or over when the course starts in September 2022
  • Have achieved, or expect to achieve, by start of the scheme in September 2022, 112 UCAS points (300 if before 2017). This must include a Maths A level/Higher, or an Extended BTEC in Engineering with Engineering Maths, or equivalent qualification.
  • In addition to this, other desirable A levels/Highers include those in science or technology subjects, for example, Computer Science, Physics or Electronics
  • Be legally allowed to work in the UK
  • Have lived in the UK, Ireland or the European Economic Area (EEA), for at least three years before the start of the apprenticeship. Or have either pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme and lived in the UK, EEA or Gibraltar for at least three years.

We’ll ask you to give examples to show you’re:

  • Technically minded, with a good understanding of the role
  • Fascinated by how things work, and are designed and built
  • A natural problem solver who likes fixing things (safely)
  • Able to efficiently multitask and work under pressure
  • Good at communicating and collaborating with people.

Don’t worry if you don’t have an extensive CV. You can share examples of your passion for technology from anywhere. That might be other work experience, your time in education, volunteering - even times you’ve helped your friends and family out with technical issues.

We’d love to hear from ex-service personnel for our London, Jersey and Norwich roles. If you’ve left the Armed Forces, are or thinking about it, and fit the above bill - get in touch.
