Matt Gullen

P&A – Project Management Assistant

About You

I’m Matt, I joined the Project & Commercial Management team in Birmingham in 2021 after graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a BSc in Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management. I have always had an interest in the construction industry and the built environment so a job at WSP was great for me. At WSP there are so many opportunities for progression and to move onto some of the biggest projects within the construction industry.

Why WSP Graduate Development Programme?

The Graduate Development Programme at WSP has been very supportive with all aspects not only the work side but also checking in on our wellbeing and if we had settled in well. The scheme has also been great for helping us achieve our qualifications such as that of the RICS. The Professional Growth Network is another great asset for all joining the company it is a great shared space which helps all young and upcoming professionals. It offers a wide range of activities including many experiences to help with team building outside of the work environment.

What is the culture like at WSP?

The key difference that separates WSP from other competitors in my opinion is the outlook they have on mental health and the care that is taken to looking after all members of staff. As an early career professional my mentor and line manager have been a great asset to me, I frequently travel to Manchester for catch ups with my Line manager and outside of that they frequently have meetings with me and regular messages checking in and ensuring that I am coping with the workload and that my general wellbeing is all good. I have had nothing but a great experience with the culture within WSP.

What’s the application process like?

When applying I found it a very simple process. I found my interview to be a great experience. Beforehand I was very nervous about the whole experience as this was the first interview that I had for a job in the construction industry. During the interview I found it to be a great experience where it was much more like a conversation as opposed to in some interviews where it feels like more of a grilling. I found it to be a welcoming environment which set the tone right from the off for what this company is about.

Why should I join your team?

The key thing that makes our team stand out is the diversity of projects on offer. It is a case where you can be working on one scheme for a year or so and if you want a change can merely ask and most likely be put onto another scheme. The projects on offer range from working on roads or trains to working with the central government or with defense systems within the UK. It is these opportunities that always make working at WSP an interesting and exciting experience. There is a plethora of exciting projects that we have worked on however the key ones that highlight the exciting opportunities available are that of working on the Houses of Parliament, Tottenham Court station and the UK military flight training system. These projects not only highlight how high end some of the projects are but also the diversity on offer at WSP.
