In 2012 I graduated from Heriot-Watt University with a Masters in Civil Engineering (MEng) with International Studies; I joined Jacobs soon after.

My first project with Jacobs was a site supervision role on the Forth Replacement Crossing project, where I was involved in monitoring site works and a number of other project management tasks. As a Consultant Civil Engineer, it is very important for your development to get experience on site and I am very grateful to get this so early in my career.

I then moved back to the office and worked on the A96 Inverness to Nairn dual carriageway upgrade project. For this, I was immediately involved with designing everything from drainage channels to new grade separated junctions. I was very glad to see that as a relatively new graduate I was quickly involved in a number of different aspects of the project delivery.

I was then transferred to the A9 dualling project. I have been able to develop my responsibility on the A9 project; it has been great to see that my experience with the company is valued and there is scope for progression through Jacobs.

Jacobs has a Graduate Development Programme, which involves working towards 12 key skills. These key skills have topics that are aligned with the professional accreditation development objectives your institution may have. To help you complete the key skills, you choose a mentor who reviews your key skills and can help you get the experience you need to achieve them. Jacobs also runs in-house training sessions and there is a graduate weekend for team building with graduates from around the UK and beyond. We have a dedicated training group in the office that organises development events, and support is always there to help you with your professional accreditation (in my case chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers).

One of the reasons I joined Jacobs is the potential to travel. With offices around the world there is the opportunity to work with teams in other countries and to do placements abroad. The office also organises social events to bring together the teams. Overall Jacobs has been a great start to my career allowing me to progress with a good working atmosphere and a supportive development structure.
