Our Ranger Year in Industry Programme offers the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the frontline of our business. The programme will enable you to develop your skills and experiences further across core areas: Customer, People, Project and Commercial.

You’ll will be the first point of contact for our 4 million annual visitors, and you will be given responsibilities such as looking after our land, our buildings and the wildlife.

You’ll gain an insight into our business through a 12-month unique placement, where you’ll learn about different aspects of our business whilst working on a range of projects which will help address real life challenges and drive tangible change.

Throughout the year you’ll enhance your critical thinking, leadership, and strategic thinking, as well as having the opportunity to showcase your creativity and really add value in shaping our future direction.

What will you learn?

You will learn the following either directly from your placement, or through supplementary training or project work:

  • You will learn how to look after the land, the building, the wildlife, and our visitors at our visitor sites
  • How to develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders, such as external contractors, wildlife trust, local authorities, and the local community 
  • Assist our Site Supervisors by carrying out day-to-day liaison with our on-site tenants and their staff, including sailing, fishing, water sports and cycling, managing any conflict resolution e.g. between recreation and conservation interests, and safe operations on site. 
  • Undertake health and safety checks and complete maintenance records. Responsible for accident reporting and investigation; carrying out security and maintenance checks on all assets including buildings, site furniture, path networks, all machinery and equipment; car parks and event management.
  • Practical conservation management on land including Sites of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserves and Local Nature Reserves Guiding and supervising volunteers 

Our New Talent Team will guide you and support you every step of the way. Furthermore, your line manager and mentor will be there to help you in making sure you reach your full potential here at Severn Trent. 

Our Rangers work on a rota system, so you’ll need to be able to work regular weekends and bank holidays.

Typical contracts are 37 hours per week, however there may be flexibility around the structure of your working hours, team and line manager dependent.

Who we're looking for

Entry Criteria: Any degree background but an interest in sustainability is preferred. 

A full driving license and access to your own vehicle is required in this role.

  • A love of variety in a role and ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced working environment  
  • Ability to quickly prioritise tasks and the initiative to dive head-first into problem solving. No two days are the same on the front line and not every day goes to plan, so you’ll need to be quick on your feet to respond!  
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and enjoy working with multiple teams 
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information and effectively communicate this to different team members and audiences 
  • Ability to travel freely across our patch to visit different sites and travel to meetings and training days  
  • Courage to step up to the plate by supporting out of hours 
  • Curiosity to learn quickly in a reactive and dynamic working environment
