I’m really excited to be leading the Graduate Programme for SSE’s Thermal Energy business. We’re looking for bright sparks to join our Engineering, Operations, Project Development and Commercial teams to help set our business up for future success.
Thermal Energy incorporates SSE’s Flexible Generation, Energy-from-Waste and Energy Storage operations, all of which have a major role to play in the transition to a low-carbon future.
We currently own and operate five of the most flexible and efficient gas-fired power stations in the UK and Ireland, providing reliable capacity at scale in response to market changes and events. Right now we’re investing £350m to construct our new 840MW Keadby 2 project in Lincolnshire, which is expected to be the cleanest and most efficient CCGT in Europe. In addition to our current development pipeline, we have a number of existing sites which are well-placed for the development of further super-efficient CCGTs if required.
We’re also developing new energy-from-waste projects, including Ferrybridge Multifuel 2 (FM2), a £325m joint investment between SSE and Wheelabrator Technologies. FM2, combined with the existing FM1 facility, will divert an estimated 1.3m tonnes of waste from landfill and instead use it as a sustainable source of energy.
Did you know SSE holds around 40% of the UK’s gas storage capacity at our Aldbrough and Atwick sites on the East Yorkshire coast? These sites offer valuable flexibility and hedging services to the UK and interconnected gas markets.
We’re really excited about how we can utilise emerging technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and hydrogen to build a business that continues to provide the flexible and reliable energy people need, while helping to drive the transition to ‘net zero’ carbon emissions by 2050.
