Summer Placement

"At SSE no two days are the same. You will be challenged and will need to manage all your different work, but it is rewarding and will give you invaluable experience that employers are looking for."

I am studying a MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Surrey. I have completed my third year and will be working for SSE as a placement student over the summer. I will return to university to finish my final year of my MEng.

I was ecstatic when I received the call telling me that I had secured a summer placement at SSE. I was very excited to be able to gain industrial experience working for one of the Big 6 UK energy companies. I was based at the SSE office in Forbury, Reading for 12 weeks. My role title was: Graduate Intern – Distributed Energy.

I was given lots of different opportunities to get involved with lots of different projects. I was given my own data management project to manage for the duration of my placement that I would see through from start to finish. I was also involved in lots of different projects that the team were working on including heating network proposals, energy efficiency surveys and feasibility studies. It was a very busy summer at SSE so there was lots work to be involved with!

As I am a mechanical engineering student, I was able to follow my interests and shape my placement to get involved with work that I found interesting and that was relevant to my course. This meant I could observe and get involved with engineering aspects of current project. I was included in work and projects which allowed me to apply my skills learnt at university as well as learn skills that could only be learnt by working in a professional environment.

I gained a lot of experience over the duration of my summer placement and met a lot of great people who were all willing to help me learn. I learnt a lot of heat networks, district heating and data management. I also had the opportunity to visit some energy centre sites in London and see how these sites were run and managed. Being involved in a range of different projects helped me to gain knowledge in lots of different areas and gave me great exposure to the work done by SSE.

SSE is a great place to work if you want to get real professional experience and be involved in different projects. My placement at SSE helped me to gain lots of skills and knowledge about the energy sector and to work on a number of different projects, all of which were at different stages of progression. I felt very nervous at first, but everyone was very welcoming and always helped me whenever I needed advice. This created a friendly and enjoyable working environment.

I learnt a huge amount in only 12 weeks working at SSE. The atmosphere is very friendly and everybody was willing to help me to learn. I had great support and I was very well looked after by my team. By working at SSE, I have gained professional skills and experience which I will be able to utilise in the future. My summer placement has given me exposure of the energy industry of which I had little knowledge and had encouraged me to pursue a career in this sector.

At SSE no two days are the same. You will be challenged and will need to manage all your different work, but it is rewarding and will give you invaluable experience that employers are looking for. The thing I found most interesting was learning about all the different work the SSE gets involved with as I had no idea about all the new technologies that are being implemented to improve efficiency and create a more sustainable energy industry.

I would definitely recommend a placement at SSE.
