IT Graduate Programme

About his first experiences after joining the RWE IT Graduate Programme

I came to RWE after completing a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science at the University of Lincoln. I had spent some time working with an Aviation company as part of a year in industry. I learnt a lot during this time, including the fact that the aviation industry wasn’t for me. Having always been interested in the energy industry, I was looking at multiple energy firms for a graduate position, and was drawn to RWE due to its push towards renewable energy.

I was also excited about the opportunity to have 4 rotations over the 2 year scheme as opposed to spending the whole time in one department, which allows me to find my ideal place in the company. The chance to spend rotations in other countries is also a big bonus.

Network of experienced graduates

With multiple years of graduates spread across multiple programmes, there is a vast network of graduates who have had experiences in all sorts of completely different areas of the company. This is very useful when it comes to picking a next rotation, as you are able to hear about all sorts of experiences different people have had with various rotations instead of just reading a description on a piece of paper. This allows you to ‘fine-tune’ your next rotation choice based on what people can tell you.

Responsibility from day one

In my current rotation in IT project management I was quickly introduced to lots of people throughout RWE IT, giving me the confidence to go straight to people with any questions or queries straight away. This made it much easier to make progress with my work in the first few weeks. I was also immediately given the responsibility of setting up meetings that were necessary for my area of the project, and I was even running some meetings with teams in RWE IT within weeks in order to establish the status of the project within each team. Being introduced to doing this so early on will be very useful in future rotations, where I will already have the confidence to introduce myself to and set up meetings with people I’ve not met yet in order to make quick progress with my work.
