Our 12-month Software Development placement enables you to experience working as part of an Agile development team, developing software and systems for some of the biggest retail and hospitality clients that PCMS work with.

About the Programme

At the end of the 12-month Software Development Placement, you will:

  • Have used and improved upon key knowledge learned during your initial years at university, this will include:
    • Application of O-O techniques using Java
    • Service orientated architectures
    • XML & JSON
    • Java script
    • SQL
    • TDD and BDD methodologies
    • Dependency Injection/IOC
  • Have delivered code that will be utilised in enterprise class, mission critical solutions for blue chip retailers.
  • Have a strong understanding of PCMS, our customers and our products and services.
  • Be able to effectively communicate at all levels with others, both inside and outside of our business.
  • Be able to use problem solving skills successfully
  • Have developed a range of skills and knowledge to enhance your future career

About the Role

You will be developed within the Software Development team and given real work from day one. You will have individual responsibilities and deliverables into key client projects. Work completed successfully will be utilised by blue chip retailers in enterprise class, mission critical systems.

You will be involved in a variety of development activities including testing application development, assisting in project management process changes and tool adoption. During the course of the year you will be given the opportunity to experience a wide range of technical skills and programming languages such as: Java, SQL, JavaScript, and Objective C*, XML, tools such as Confluence, Jira, Eclipse and Junit and Enterprise Frameworks such as: Spring, Struts 2, JMS, JQuery, Web services and JMS (Java Messaging Services).

You will be participating in Scrum meetings (estimation, planning, retrospectives and sprint reviews), interacting and working with Business Analysts, Architects, QAs, Development Project Managers (DPMs), Developers and Customers.
By the end of the 12 month placement you will be an active member of an Agile development team, relied upon to deliver code as part of a given story/feature. You will have proven experience of Agile development and Scrum methodologies, as well as development and quality assurance techniques.

About You

You will be studying for a degree in IT, Science or a Maths related subject (e.g. Computer Science, Physics, Maths, Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical).

Essential skills/experience:

  • Experience of working with programming languages ideally Java, C++ or C#
  • Experience of working with databases e.g. SQL
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Able to work as part of a team

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Experience or knowledge of processes and methodologies e.g. SCRUM or Kanban
  • Knowledge of web development and mobile applications
