Communications Electronics

I'm a Communications and Electronics Engineer Officer at RAF Coningsby, operating as the Manager of a team of 52 personnel supporting the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. In order for these modern aircraft platforms to operate, they require an increasingly complex suite of electronic systems to be delivered and supported, both on the Station at Coningsby, or deployed overseas on Exercise/Operations. It is these Engineering and Aircrew Mission Planning systems and the constant electronic data requirements of the aircraft that my team look after on a 24 hour, 365 days a year basis.

The people aspect can be the most rewarding of the role, with a sense of pride being shared with any successes within your Flight, and also sometimes just the rewarding aspects of helping your personnel when discussing issues going on within their career development or personal lives.

My Day

Although it sounds relatively clichéd, no one day is the same, which is one of the most interesting aspects of service life. Although you can become office-bound at times, with meetings to attend and emails to answer, ensuring your team support the Typhoon Squadron's daily flying programme, and the personnel deployed overseas remains a primary focus. With up to three separate teams deployed away from the Station at any one time, and the personnel remaining on unit spread across different working shift patterns, ensuring you're available and supporting your personnel to the best of your ability remains the key task throughout any day.

Through my service in the RAF I've played Rugby in the USA, across Europe, and also completed a two week tour of Fiji.
