Materials Development Scientist

The role will focus in these three areas:

  1. Industrial development of novel class coatings
  2. Laboratory evaluation to characterise coating performances from initial testing samples to scale up factory trials
  3. Support project manager; writing and presenting data, meeting suppliers, attending to relevant conferences and supporting trials when required

Detailed Responsibilities:

  • Coating material optimisation using structured experimentation
  • Laboratory testing and validation of materials
  • Draft of new protocols and review working instructions to improve testing methods
  • Initial food contact and regulatory compliance assessment where needed
  • Internal and external presentations of findings and results
  • Trials support (Suppliers, Crown factories…)
  • Support project management activities including report writing

Person Specification

Skills and knowledge: 

  • Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Polymer Chemistry -Degree Level  
  • Track record of successful research or knowledge in one or more of the following fields would be desirable:
    • bio-derived materials
    • metallurgy
    • polymer science
    • nanotechnology
    • photochemistry
    • functional coatings, protective materials, formulation chemistry
    • coating, printing or related processes
  • Knowledge of analytical methods and test equipment, polymer and surface characterisation

Soft Skills

  • Proactive individual with an innovative way of thinking
  • Able to work in a methodical way
  • Confident presenter, preferably with experience of delivering presentations to academic and/ or technical audiences
  • Adaptability and flexibility
  • Effective communicator; excellent interaction between a broad range of partners (SMEs, multinational suppliers, businesses), as well as academic/research organisations, to meet a series of challenging goals
  • Capable of working autonomously and as a part of a team


  • The jobholder might need to travel throughout the UK, Europe and the US; sometimes at short notice to support the project and the project manager
  • Preferably Driving license
