The Service

Mace offers a wide range of consultancy services, and is employed by clients for industry leading expertise, including cost management. Our cost consultancy service provides independent, impartial, specialist advice on the full scope of construction costs throughout the life cycle of projects.

Mace adopts a modern approach to cost consultancy and is consistently ranked in the top 10 UK quantity surveyors. We engage with design teams and procure projects to achieve best possible value from construction costs, market testing a minimum of 70% of the cost plan value for real time costing on our projects.

The Role

Quantity surveyors working in a consultancy capacity are often referred to as private quantity surveyors (PQS) whose role can be defined under multiple job titles such as cost consultant or cost manager.

As a cost consultancy graduate you will be in the Major Programmes team, focusing on complex multi-facetted projects that will have significant impact on local communities, such as London 2012. You will work closely with both main contractors and clients by providing authoritative commercial and risk advice. Responsibilities include producing cost plans, value engineering, negotiating cost variations and producing final accounts.


We are currently recruiting for Cost Consultants to join in Bristol, Birmingham and Winchester.

Professional qualification routes

Mace’s cost consultancy team provides extensive training and support for graduates including RICS workshops, leading to professional RICS qualification. Graduates who do not have a RICS accredited degree may be required to complete a conversion course.

Minimum requirements

  • A minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree (expected or obtained), 240 UCAS points and Grade C in GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent qualifications)
  • Evidence of significant extra-curricular activities that demonstrate drive and excellent interpersonal skills
  • A passion for a career in the construction industry.

Qualifications, knowledge and skills

Mace’s cost consultancy graduates ideally have a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited degree in quantity surveying. Other degrees are considered.

You will require a range of connected skills including:

  • Strong numerical ability
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build excellent relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders
  • Drive to achieve results. Candidates need to be able to take responsibility for effectively delivering a range of tasks to a high quality of standards throughout end to end service delivery.
