Graduate Automation/Software Engineer

How would we sum it up?

 This is an exciting role for an individual who’s interested in machines and how they work. Today’s best factories are highly automated and future factories will be even more so, giving you the opportunity to work at the cutting-edge of manufacturing. You will be working on development projects involving software development, automation and robotics. It’s an interesting role in an innovative sector, with lots of scope to develop your technical skills and expertise.    

What’s the business all about?

The business is SMS Automation, a specialist manufacturer and provider of high-tech automation machines and motion control components that was established in South Yorkshire in 2000. The business prides itself on the fact that their engineers and support team possess first-hand experience of “what works when”, allowing them to give excellent advice to customers, saving them hours of valuable time and encouraging them to keep coming back to the company, time after time – a process that you would play a key role in.

What would you be doing?

Typical activities include:

  • Developing a sound understanding of SMS Automation’s range of products
  • Developing software using object oriented programming (e.g. Java, C#) and equipment specific control languages (e.g. IEC ladder diagram).  NB Training in relevant programming languages will be provided.
  • Working on control system design• Going on site visits• Testing and commissioning automated equipment software for machine control systems

What type of person are they looking for? 

All the relevant training will be provided to help you succeed but the successful person for the role will:

  • Be a graduate of any STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths) degree
  • Be quick to pick up technical knowledge, even if it’s in an area you haven’t previously studied
  • Have an ability to manage time, prioritise workload and meet deadlines• Have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Be able to communicate effectively and professionally both in writing and verbally
  • Be analytical, with excellent problem-solving skills

It would be great if you had the following but don’t be put off if not!

  • Have knowledge of electrical components and circuits
