I completed the Sisk Excelerate graduate programme, in 2019. The programme was three years in duration and over that time I have experienced many positive and also challenging moments which have enabled me to learn and grow in the profession.
The Excelerate programme has been devised in such a way that helps you to develop and progress within the construction industry in a professional and supported way.
It is a well-structured person centered support system, it will develop and enhance your career opportunities, assist you towards obtaining your Chartership and increase your understanding of cross-professions.
The application process was straight forward, submit a CV, cover letter and answers some questions. Then complete an online competency, verbal and numerical reasoning aptitude test. Attend for an assessment day, this involved a variety of exercises which I enjoyed. I liked this day as I felt as ease and everyone was very friendly and welcoming.
From the very beginning you are assigned a mentor, I believe a lot of thought goes into pairing the right mentor with each person on the programme. Your mentor is on hand to help you with your quarterly report, give their advice of issues which may arise and to help you work towards gaining Chartership. You will have regular contact with your mentor throughout your time on the Excelerate programme. Your Line Manager is another person who will support and guide you along with the site team, other graduates and the HR department. The workshops which we attend are designed to enhance your abilities, develop your skills, and are a great opportunity to meet the other graduates and senior management.
This is a difficult question as I have enjoyed all of my placements, as I have worked in different areas of the businness. I have developed as a professional and upskilled in such a way that I know that would not have been possible for me if I were not on this programme.
My day is varied and no two days are the same, for example one day I may be in a meeting with the client and the next day I could be doing a safety walk on the site with an Engineer.
Challenges are part of life, I suppose for me it is just before I start on a new placement, not knowing the Line Manager or site team.
Let your personality shine through, it’s an opportunity too good to miss.
