Dylan O’Regan

Excelerate Graduate Engineer (2017 intake)

"The programme allows you to gain a wealth of experience through varied placements."

Studied at (university/ college): University of Limerick

Degree: Civil Engineering Level 8

What attracted you to Sisk and the Excelerate programme?

The investment Sisk put into my development and the opportunity to travel.

In no more than 20 words explain what Excelerate is?

It is a mentorship programme which allows the graduate to gain a wealth of experience through varied placements.

How did you find the recruitment process?

The recruitment process was demanding. It consisted of an online application, an aptitude test and a full day of assessments at Sisk’s head office. The full day of assessments was challenging, but also gave us the opportunity to recover if one assessment of the day went poorly.

How are you supported through the programme?

The Excelarate graduate is supported by a mentor for the duration of the Excelarate programme (3 years). The mentor holds a senior position within Sisk and supports the Excelerate graduate through the first years of their professional career.

Tell me in your own words what your best experience has been on the Excelerate programme to date?

Managing the landscaping package on my placement at White City, London. It involved dealing directly with the Sub-contractor’s Project Manager and Engineer to manage program, interface works and resolving issues with design and on site.

Please describe in summary what your day / week looks like in your current / most recent placement you’d like to share?

On my current placement, we are coming to the end of the project, therefore, I spend the majority of my time focused on quality checks and closing out quality issues raised. This includes raising snags, chasing sub-contractors to close-out and attending walk-downs.

What have you found most challenging?

Getting up-to-speed when moved to a new placement. For the placements I have been placed on, the projects have been in full-swing, site teams and responsibilities established which can be difficult to break into.

Any tips for future applicants?

Be prepared to travel for your placements.
