Graduate Physics Associate Systems Assessment Specialist

Supports delivery of deterrent effectiveness, consequence assessment and technical verification capability to internal and external AWE stakeholders.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Preparation of technical reports and presentations in the relevant areas of systems assessment
  • Development of skills, knowledge, and capabilities necessary to support current work programmes
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player
  • Developing subject matter expertise in the fields pertinent to their role within Systems Assessment
  • Delivery of technical assessments using appropriate methodologies
  • Development of software codes, where appropriate
  • Participation in experimental trials, where appropriate
  • Engagement with relevant communities across AWE
  • Responsible for undertaking other duties as reasonably required from time to time by line and task management

Knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications

Essential

  • Able to analyse complex problems, propose solutions and plan work to enhance capability
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with external customers and other interested groups, some with a non-technical background
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to make sound technical judgments
  • A proven ability to deliver technical assessment work to time and quality
  • Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate methodologies to address complex technical problems

Desirable

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant topic (see Skills below)
  • High level of proficiency in at least one of the following discplines:
    • Dispersion modelling
    • Hydro dynamic simulation
    • Nuclear phenomenology
    • Arms control treaties
    • Missile defence technologies
    • Deterrence policy
    • Geophysical sciences
    • Structural response
  • Experience in a STEM role
  • Proven capability to effectively engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience in operational research techniques
  • Experience in a field appropriate to nuclear phenomenology, detection science and geophysical sciences
  • The use of software modelling to conduct technical assessments
  • Willingness to conduct experimental work that may involve explosives and hazardous materials, potentially requiring the use of a respirator

Special requirements

  • Willingness to travel abroad to represent the company, e.g. USA
  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the role
