Graduate Physics Associate Technology Development Specialist

The Associate Technology Development Specialist develops their ability to make enhancements to technology hardware and how it is deployed in generating empirical scientific data. Working under the supervision of experienced Technology Development Scientists, the Associate Technology Development Specialist assists in the development of new technology solutions and through on-the-job training, learns how to apply their knowledge and expertise.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Assists in team technical development projects or tackles alone, certain task elements drawing on their own field of technical ability
  • Makes decisions on how to deliver their tasks, drawing on their technical knowledge to solve problems or seek help where needed
  • Participates in collaborative working relationships as part of a team (internal/external)
  • Follows established technical processes and equipment operating instructions and communicates ideas on process improvements
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality and be a great team player
  • Delivery of technical objectives to time, cost and quality
  • Follow safe, efficient and successful scientific research processes
  • Undertake assessment of own work as part of progress checking, provide progress reports and deliver final technical output to scope
  • Develop awareness of team, function and company processes and technical capabilities
  • Presents own scientific achievements to the team, function and project through published work and presentations
  • Responsible for undertaking other duties as reasonably required from time to time by line and task management

Knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications


  • Honours degree in science or engineering discipline or equivalent level of qualification or practical work experience demonstrating competence at this level higher degree in science discipline
  • Ability to plan and manage the delivery of own tasks over short planning cycles
  • Able to provide technical input within own field of expertise that can influence project or team activity
  • Ability to operate specialist equipment and follow specialist research processes to deliver solutions to technical problems
  • Ability to solve technical problems by applying specialist technical knowledge to own work or working as part of a team, demonstrates the ability to learn new skills and technical knowledge outside their own area of expertise
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas and present sound justification for proposals on technology development activities
  • Basic experience applying technology within own field of expertise that is of relevance to team and project area
  • Basic experience presenting technical work within the team with some exposure to presenting to the function or programme customers
  • Exposure to managing own project activities that deliver on technical and financial objectives
  • Detailed knowledge of specialist area and a growing awareness of the work of the team and associated programme areas


  • Higher degree in science discipline
  • Good level of innovation and creativity

Special requirements

  • Ability and willingness for international travel
  • The ability to work in hazardous environments safely, responsibly and effectively
  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain security clearance for the role
