Working at AWE

What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?

For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear weapons research and development. We have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent – Trident. We also use our unique skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.

It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?

AWE is currently recruiting for Lab Technician to be based in France. This would be a fantastic opportunity for someone who possesses practical experience in an experimental, or operational environment, who’s looking to further their career. A recognised qualification, in an engineering/science discipline, is preferred.

What we do is unique and so are our people

For 70 years we've been part of the defence and security for our nation.

Following a specialised training programme in the UK and continuing in France the typical responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and calibration of scientific equipment.
  • Planning, setting up, recording of experiments and trials.
  • Analysing data in support of scientific experiments and hydrodynamic trials.
  • Procurement of spares and inventory control.
  • Maintain logbooks for scientific equipment.
  • Escorting of visitors and contractors.
  • Maintaining housekeeping within the facility.

Candidates must be willing and able to:

  • Obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
  • Be permanently located in France for up to 5 years.
  • To communicate in the French language (training will be provided but it should be recognised that significant personal commitment and self-study will be required to reach the required level).
  • Work in designated areas of site including radiological and explosive environments.
  • Operating specialist movement and lifting equipment e.g., pedestrian for lift truck.

AWE (one of the best 25 big companies to work for in the UK) offers an attractive array of benefits which include:
