Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice

"I wanted to study a degree whilst also getting on the job experience and this apprenticeship gave me that option."

How long have you worked at AWE?

5 months.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over other career routes?

I wanted to study a degree whilst also getting on the job experience and this apprenticeship gave me that option. I knew that this was the route I wanted to pursue after completing my A-levels and looked for many degree apprenticeships and found that this one was the best for me.

Why did you choose AWE?

I felt that this course would allow me to further develop, not only academically but also personally. I was very impressed when I first visited for an assessment day which then eventually led to an offer of the apprenticeship. I have had to relocate to study here, but it has definitely been worth it.

Tell us about your time at AWE?

I have been based in the skills academy working with other apprentices on many different tasks-working in both mechanical and electrical workshops. A typical day for me consists of working on a task in one of the workshops, and then when it is completed, we measure and mark our work to ensure that it meets the specified requirements. We also have the chance to work on our university assignments meaning that we can work flexibly.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing is being able to work on many projects with different people both at work and when we are at university. We have worked on a vast array of topics in the short time we have been here, and it has been a positive challenge that I have found enjoyable.

How do you see your career progressing?

Upon completion of my apprenticeship I hope to stay at the company and use the knowledge and skills that I have developed over the course of my apprenticeship in actual situations. In 5 years’ time I will be in my first year of full time work and I will have achieved my degree.

What are the benefits of AWE?

Working a 9-day fortnight is a great benefit but the main benefit here is that our training and qualifications are paid for and we don’t have a student loan like regular university students would.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining AWE?

Do not hesitate about applying as there are so many opportunities to develop your skills and further your career.
