Graduate Development Programme

The graduate programme aims to create well rounded scientists and engineers who will gain a wide range of exposure across the Science and Engineering department.

The programme provides a unique opportunity to work across groups and build an understanding of how these operate and interconnect. You’ll learn and receive support from colleagues and teams around you and your thoughts, and opinions will be valued.

Blended learning

Over the two-year Programme, a comprehensive framework of development will provide the opportunity to build a wide portfolio of skills and experiences needed to excel in a research environment.

Alongside technical skills, the programme provides an ideal environment to build a range of core skills across areas such as:

  • Communication, teamworking, problem solving, engagement and impact.
  • Honing and enhancing personal qualities such as resilience, self-confidence, self-reflection, continuous learning and feedback.
  • Self-management skills such as preparation and prioritisation, commitment to research, time management, responsiveness to change.
  • Professional and career development.

Rotations

Rotations provide an optimal environment for hands-on learning and coaching. To support this, technical training will be provided in groups where relevant.

Outreach

We provide you with the opportunity to be part of a caring and daring community that truly values you and your contribution.

As part of the programme, you will have the opportunity to be part of a community, sharing learning with others and developing skills that are vital. Outreach provides multiple benefits including:

  • Enhancing the visibility of NPL’s impact grows engagement in the community.
  • Significantly enhance your skills and reinforcing learning.
  • Developing communication and presentation skills by building confidence in presenting scientific concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Building social connections and network contacts.
  • Contributing and participating in outreach can be personally rewarding and fulfilling.
