Graduate Tunnelling Engineer

As a Graduate Tunnelling Engineer you will be working on one of our tunnelling projects as part of the Murphy Graduate programme.

There are lots of ups and downs in an industry like ours: projects can change; you can run into some pretty big obstacles (like, say, elephant remains on your building site). So we need people who aren’t fazed by that: you get your nose down and you work hard, whatever comes your way.

Go-getters who own their development. We support our apprentices and graduates, and we recognise their successes, but nothing’s going to be handed to you on a plate here. If you want a promotion, you’ve got to work for it, and if you want to learn something, it’s up to you to pursue it.

Some of the tasks a Graduate Tunnelling Engineer can expect to get involved in:

• Working mainly but not exclusively within the tunnelling team of J Murphy and Sons
• This is a site based production role carrying out shift engineer duties managing tunnel construction using Tunnel
• Boring Machines or Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL) as required
• You will have the opportunity to work on tunnels being constructed in the Water, Power and Transport sectors
• Due to the nature of the work on tunnelling projects there will be an element of shift work to take into consideration

In short, by grabbing every chance you get. Alongside working on some fascinating, challenging and occasionally jaw-dropping projects, you’ll also be part of our Murphy Learning programme, where everyone has ownership of their own training. You decide what skills you want to gain, with support and guidance from your manager. We call it the 70:20:10 principle, and it goes like this:

Location

As a Construction and Civil Engineering company we have projects, big and small, based all over the UK. From Glasgow to Gosport we want you to experience as much as possible when you join our graduate programme, there are a whole host of skills and competencies we want you to experience and for that we need you to be fully flexible on location. As part of our graduate programme, we will be rotating you every 8months around our projects so that you can maximise your learning experience and exposure to your field of study.

Additional Requirements

Due to the nature of the work and size of our sites we require you to have a full clean UK driving license.
