U-POL is a leading supplier of bodyfiller, coatings, aerosols, abrasives, polishes and consumables to the car repair market with a market reputation for high quality products and sales to over 100 countries.  U-POL manufactures in the UK at its Wellingborough site and has additional warehouse facilities in the USA, South Africa and Russia. 

We are currently looking for a new recruit to join our friendly and highly innovative product development team in our global technical centre in Wellingborough, UK.

RAPTOR How to Tint and Spray

RAPTOR® is a tough durable truck bed liner and protective coating. Available in black and tintable versions, it’s suitable for any application where a tough, heavy duty coating is needed. RAPTOR® is flexible, waterproof and can be sprayed over a variety of substrates.

Job Purpose:

The successful candidate will typically be working on 1 – 2 polyurethane coatings based projects with significant business impact and will complete all relevant laboratory work and testing related to these projects. They will complete their university studies alongside their work at U-POL.


Basic salary £18,000 per annum, 25 days paid leave (plus exam leave on days of exams) and access to company bonus scheme and pension. This role is a 54 week placement and will run from 5th July 2021 – 15th July 2022 (although the start date can be negotiated if need be).

They can expect excellent support and training to develop as an industrial chemist and will gain valuable experience of formulation work within a global chemical company. 

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Observing all safety requirements in the workplace.
  2. Working with paints and/or associated products in our company laboratories under the supervision of a senior scientist.
  3. Making suggestions on how to improve products based on observations in the laboratory.
  4. Completion of university studies alongside full time job.
  5. Submission of a Masters level report on main project.
  6. Testing product performance using standard test methods.
  7. Accurately recording and reporting data related to product performance.
  8. Pro-actively manage their own development to increase their own skill set and competency.

Person specification:

  • Chemistry student looking to complete their sandwich year working in the chemical industry.
  • Good team player with strong interpersonal skills.
