Manufacturing Graduate

Before I started the graduate programme, I had previously studied BSc Biochemistry & Pharmacology at the University of Strathclyde. As part of my degree, I completed two Industrial Placements with GlaxoSmithKline and Unilever, but had no further food manufacturing experience.

Having had a personal interest in the importance of the supply chain for large companies, the Manufacturing Graduate Programme at Bakkavor seemed the perfect fit!

Year 1: Section Leader at Cucina Sano

I am originally from Glasgow so had to relocate to Lincolnshire for my first placement. Prior to my start date, I was given the contact details of the other graduates on my cohort and those from previous years. This enabled me to seek information from them regarding my new site, local area and how best to secure accommodation.

My Induction week was a great opportunity to get to know the other graduates from my cohort who were on different programmes. By the end of the week, I fully understood the role that a Bakkavor Graduate has within the company and where we fit within the bigger picture.

Bakkavor Meals Boston is a M&S dedicated site that produces Italian Ready and Deli meals. During my first few weeks, focus was placed on understanding the site’s inner workings as well as meeting the office staff and those on the factory floor.

As a Section Leader, I was responsible for two assembly lines and their production. I also had the opportunity to partake in project work being conducted around the site. This allowed me to implement skills that I had gained at university and help improve aspects of production. Everyday posed new and different challenges which I overcame through innovative solutions in order to obtain the right results for Bakkavor.

Year 2: Section Manager at Bakkavor Salads, Bourne Factory

As a second-year graduate, my responsibilities have been taken up a notch. I am now more involved with the admin side of management, such has approving annual leave, dealing with absences and having contact meetings with staff. Building the knowledge and behavioural skills for management of great teams.

I start my shift early to confirm the day’s plan and conduct a handover with the Nightshift team. When on the factory floor, I along with the other Section Manager ensure that all staff are aware of what assembly line they are on and what product they will start with. Throughout production we check that all GMP standards are being maintained.

As Bourne is a multi-customer site, we have a number of orders submitted throughout the day. As a result, throughout my shift I update the Planning team with the packs we have produced and any issues we may have had since our previous update. This communication is vital in order to produce an efficient plan and meet customer demand. My shift ends with a handover with Nightshift.

I have learned so much during my time at Bakkavor and I am incredibly grateful for the help and guidance I have received. I’ve attended workshops, activities and conferences that have helped me to apply theories and good management practices into real-life situations. I have a Manufacturing Skills Chart to follow and objectives to meet. The Fieri Leadership Programme has been amazing as it is tailored to the needs of each graduate as a future Bakkavor leader.

My one piece of advice to all new manufacturing graduates: The Manufacturing Graduate Programme is not a typical 9-5 office job!
