I am currently a 3rd Year Food Science Undergraduate. Originally, for my Year-In-Industry work experience, I had been looking for placements that were more science-based, but after studying a couple of modules on the practical and legal side of food production, I decided that a role which allowed me to learn and experience more in technical would be far more interesting. Furthermore, the role of Specification Technologist appealed to me, particularly as involvement in specifications on my course was limited. But specifications are important to production within factories, providing a basis for products to be consistent within retailer policy and legal framework.
I started my placement in July and have been involved in writing and checking product specifications ranging from Profiteroles to Brownies, learned more about the policies and requirements of different retailers and have attended several training sessions. These sessions include taste panels, internal auditing, food safety and building an inclusive work culture.
I have also attended Induction sessions which covered the duties and responsibilities performed by other teams within Bakkavor, including Procurement, Process and Raw Materials. This has helped me to gain a broader picture of product development and business activity.
Although my role is predominantly office-based, I have had many opportunities to enter production areas and the factory to observe food trials and taste panels. I have even spent a few days shadowing QA Technologists to observe their duties. QA’s ensure that procedures are followed by employees and products meet the standards set by the retailer, the law and the product specifications. Tasks include sample taking, GMP audits and detailed cleaning routines.
Even though I have been at Bakkavor for a short period of time, I have been able to observe and learn so much about the factory production of food products, as well as develop many transferrable skills including teamwork, communication, and IT. There are many opportunities offered to those who join Bakkavor for their placement year and the skills learned will be invaluable to personal and professional development. I know that the experience I have gained and continue to gain at Bakkavor will help me in my final year at University and my future career, hopefully in the food industry!
