Why does the role exist?

We are BRE

We are the world leading authority on all aspects of the built environment.

BRE’s acoustic team require an Acoustic Consultant to grow the department in capability and capacity. They will support the construction industry in bringing new technologies to market through laboratory testing, along with collaborative research and consultancy.

The team undertake a wide range of testing project for customers, provide technical acoustic support to other teams within BRE including BREEAM scheme development and undertake research for the public and private sector. The role is a unique opportunity to be involved in innovation and raising standards within the built environment.

The value this role will add:

The successful candidate will work with our customers (internal and external), their design teams, and our research partners to establish key project requirements. They will then work as part of a team to deliver practical testing/research solutions to generate technically robust outputs.

The responsibilities include:

  • establishing client’s needs; interpreting these along with design specifications/codes and standards to create proposals for testing and research work,
  • management of laboratory testing projects, including sub-contractors, sample delivery and installations,
  • undertake testing in accordance with UKAS accredited testing procedures, primarily within the laboratory and in the field from time to time (full training will be given)
  • develop testing procedures based on BS EN ISO standards as required,
  • overseeing testing and installation work,
  • ensuring test equipment is maintained in-line with UKAS requirements,
  • post-processing, reporting, and interpreting test data.
  • contributing to research and scheme development as required,
  • working with other BRE lab teams, such as HVAC engineering, to provide acoustic measurement support
  • preparing proposals and technical reports.

What experience and skills does the role need?

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate diploma in acoustics or related discipline
  • Member of the Institute of Acoustics (AMIOA or higher)
  • Previous experience in acoustics consultancy/testing.
  • Good understanding of acoustical principles and their applications to building acoustics.
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel
  • Good problem-solving ability
  • Good command of English as a working language (written and verbal communication)
  • Team player always, demonstrating a professional and courteous attitude
  • Good multi-tasking ability and time management skills
  • Experience working with both technical and non-technical clients and colleagues

Desirable:

  • Prior experience of working to UKAS accredited testing procedures or as an ANC registered tester
  • Environmental acoustic consultancy work such as pre-development noise surveys
  • Experience testing and assessing in line with BREEAM requirements
  • Experience in the measurement and analysis of vibration in the built environment
  • Familiarity with use and operation of acoustic cameras and other proprietary investigation tools/techniques
  • Prior involvement with collaborative, cross discipline research projects
  • Working knowledge of data processing software
  • Practical experience of testing/experimentation within a laboratory setting or on-site

  • Good transport links, free parking and EV charging - You can easily reach the Watford site by train, bus, bike, car or foot. For those who need to drive there is free onsite parking. We are pleased to offer free electric vehicle charging.
