GKR Scaffolding is looking for ambitious graduates to join their 2-year programme in Scaffold Design Engineering.

This is a unique opportunity to learn a specialist area of Temporary Works Engineering that is in high demand within the construction industry.

Based at Tower Bridge, the GKR design team work on complex and iconic projects in the heart of London. GKR has worked on projects such as Battersea Power Station, 22 Bishopsgate, The Royal Albert Hall and Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium.

The caliber of projects our engineers work on is enviable and allow our designers to break the mold in the way they work on projects.

Road to Net Zero

GKR is the first scaffolding specialist to be certified as Carbon Neutral and we are committed to becoming Net Zero Carbon by December 2023.

As an in-house team, our designers are part of projects from pre-tender stage through to build and adaptions. Working closely with the operations teams responsible for constructing the scaffold as well as our clients directly, you will have a more hands-on, consultative approach to design engineering. 

The programme

The role:

  • The design of scaffolding and temporary works in accordance with British and European codes of practice and UK construction and health & safety legislation.
  • Apply engineering knowledge to analyse the structural integrity of scaffolding and temporary works structures ranging from simple hand calculation to second order frame analysis.
  • Assess and design-out hazards where possible within the design process and propose effective control measures for the reduction and elimination of risk.
  • Conduct site surveys, collect and assess site information, liaise with clients and fellow construction professionals and represent the company at design and site meetings.
  • Understand the practicalities of the erection, use and dismantle of scaffolding, as well as its main functions in key industry sectors and apply this knowledge to improve our service provision, processes and standards.
  • Uphold the name and reputation of GKR Scaffolding at all times and conduct yourself in a professional and dignified manner in keeping with the values of the company. 

What you will learn

Role of the Scaffold Design Engineer

  • Role and responsibilities to society, the environment and future generations. 
  • Understand current legislation and regulations to ensure you know how to exercise your responsibilities and protect the interest of the public, client and GKR Scaffolding. Familiarise yourself with the GKR Temporary Works Procedure and Design Process.

Codes of practice and industry guidance

  • Understand current standards of good practice to ensure that all designs meet the minimum requirements and are safe to use, such as TG20 Design and Operational Guide and EN 12811-1 Temporary Works Equipment.

Production of design drawings

  • Ensuring that all designs meet the minimum requirements and are safe to use referencing the GKR Drawing Template Guide and BS 8888: 2011.

On-site information collection  

  • Current UK site conditions, site roles and how to collect relevant information for a scaffold design .

Design risk assessments

  • The process and completion of the design risk assessment with the ability to apply legislation and regulations such as SG4:15 – NASC Safety Guidance on the erection of scaffold structures and design out risk where needed.

Buildability and commercial awareness

  • Impact of design on the buildability and commercial viability of a project.

Structural analysis

  • The roles to maintain structural integrity and how to use a structural analysis software and check the results provided.

Analysis of complex structures 

  • Familiarisation with different complex structures and their behaviour. Understanding of the considerations and potential setbacks and structural analysis tips.

Who you will be

This role will suit an ambitious graduate design engineer who wants to work in an entrepreneurial, fast paced environment. We are looking for Graduates with the following skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to articulate plans clearly, and collaborate with clients and the GKR team. 
  • Highly analytical with forensic attention to detail. 
  • Adaptable with ability to work across multiple projects and manage a number a stakeholders. 
  • Proactive approach to learning and developing skills supported by the business. 
  • Ability to evaluate new technologies/platforms in line with business needs.

Details

  • Starting salary is £25,000, raising to £30,000 after the first year and £36,000 after the second year.
  • 20 days' holiday
