At Sellafield, we’re true pioneers. We led the world in nuclear power production, now we’re the world’s first movers into environmental remediation. Building on our rich history, we’re striding into an era where we’ll transform the environment, local society, the regional economy and the global nuclear industry.

Cutting-edge projects

We hear about the highly technical and interesting projects our panellists have been involved in so far.

Covering six square kilometres, the site in West Cumbria is home to more than 200 nuclear facilities. A team of 11,000 people here work alongside our supply chain partners, to tackle a diverse portfolio of decommissioning, reprocessing, spent fuel management, nuclear waste management and nuclear material management.

We are developing a high-performance, value-led organisation that reduces high hazard faster, costs the taxpayer less, and responds more quickly to potential funding changes. At the same time, we are looking for ways to maximise the socio-economic benefit from our funding and supply chain spend.

Our Graduate Programme

In the two years that you’re a part of our graduate programme, we’ll give you all the support you need to achieve chartered status and the opportunity to do placements in a variety of business areas. We’ll ensure we maximise your skills, confidence and experience.

We want you to grow in every sense. Our future, as well as yours depends on you hitting the peak of your potential. We’ll invest significant resources developing your personal and behavioural skills so that you become an influential all-round professional.

We have a thriving graduate community run by an elected group of representatives who organise frequent social activities ensuring you play as hard as you work. You will also be assigned a graduate buddy who will be more of a peer support and will help you move smoothly from student to professional life.

Our Engineering & Maintenance Programme

Engineering and Maintenance at Sellafield Ltd faces some of the most unique & challenging work in the industry, and our profession enables us to accelerate high hazard reduction in a safe, environmentally responsible, cost effective and pragmatic manner.

Responsibility starts on day one of the graduate scheme within Engineering and Maintenance. You will join a team of civil/structural engineers and building surveyors who are responsible for the inspection, surveying and maintenance of the existing civil/structural nuclear and non-nuclear infrastructure on the Sellafield site. You will be assigned specific tasks and be expected to contribute to real work, your responsibility will increase as you develop your skills and knowledge.

You will embark upon a 2-year scheme commencing in Engineering and Maintenance for the first 6 months. After which you will move around different parts of the organisation for the remainder of the scheme, in which you will be able to gain varied experience including design and construction. At the end of your 2-year scheme you will re-join Engineering and Maintenance as an engineer responsible for a number of nuclear and/or non-nuclear structures. Typical duties as a graduate and engineer within Engineering and Maintenance, include:

  • Undertaking internal and external planned maintenance inspections/surveys of existing nuclear and non-nuclear structures to ensure they are safe, fit for purpose and legally compliant.
  • Providing advice to stakeholders on completion of inspections; preparing specifications and/or design to repair defects.
  • Assessing reactive and urgent repairs, including specifying repairs, liaising with contractors and other professionals.
  • Offering advice on proposed alterations, improvements, and demolition of existing structures to ensure legal compliance; engaging with internal and external design teams; monitoring works on site to ensure quality and progress; assessing completed works to ensure adherence to specification.
  • Advising on nuclear, conventional, and environmental safety issues
  • Meeting and engaging with stakeholders including clients, consultants, engineers, and contractors
  • Maintaining and updating the asset management system for the structures under your responsibility
  • Working on the Sellafield site and in an office.

Social Impact Multiplied (Six)

We are transforming our organisation, seeking to accelerate the delivery of our mission while also making significant savings for the taxpayer. As part of this change, we are determined to deliver the maximum social impact from the £2bn of taxpayer money that we spend at Sellafield every year.

Six is our new approach to social impact which prioritises projects co-created with the community and stakeholders. It recognises that more can be achieved in partnership and that impact can be multiplied through collaboration.
