About the role

BWB Consulting has an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Engineer/Consultant to be based in the Water team at our Birmingham office.

We are looking for someone with experience of working on civil engineering projects ideally with experience of working for a consultancy, local authority or regulatory authority.

The Water Team is part of BWB’s Environment Group and is a diverse mix of engineers, geographers and ecologists combining their skills together to provide a holistic approach to our work.

The team, and the company as a whole has a collaborative atmosphere where you will be encouraged to find solutions to issues arising on your own projects taking on board the advice, skills and expertise of others.

The role would be suitable for someone with a practical and logical approach to problem solving who would like the opportunity to experience the breadth of work a consultant at BWB can become involved in.

You will be responsible for your own schemes producing designs ranging from preliminary sketches to full detailed construction drawings, reports and calculations as well as client and financial management.

We provide a broad range of services and you will have the opportunity to develop your skills working on projects which include;

  • Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)
  • Earthworks Strategies
  • Flood Risk Assessments
  • Hydraulic Modelling
  • GIS.

The diversity of our service offering means you will be able to experience a range of project types and sizes in your role and be encouraged to contribute to and influence projects immediately, with support from senior team members. The role will also require liaison and collaboration with clients and relevant approval authorities.

As an integral member of the team, you will be responsible for delivering the necessary outputs on a number of schemes, with support from a dedicated project manager, and the team around you. This includes devising appropriate solutions to flood risk and drainage matters, producing drawings, reports and necessary calculations/software outputs.

About the team

The BWB Environment Group has the capability to provide the integrated ‘one stop shop’ service needed for major projects, as well as tailored or bespoke specialist services if appropriate. Our Environment Group provides advisory, investigative, design and validation services relating to all aspects of the ground and water environment.

The Water Service sits within the Environment Group which is made up of a range of qualified engineers and environmental consultants with particular experience in the flood risk, drainage, and environmental engineering disciplines. We have a presence in multiple locations across the business and provide supported opportunities for career development.

The Water Service works either as part of multidisciplinary BWB project teams or independently for a range of key clients. We provide timely and valuable consultancy services to the development and property sector on projects of any type or size.

About you

We are seeking a motivated individual with a logical approach to problem solving. The ability to work independently, with appropriate support and advice sought where necessary will be key to excelling within this role.

As our team’s role is as a pre-planning advisor, solutions you put forward will shape and influence developments moving forward, so a desire to work on schemes at a strategic level would be beneficial.

From a technical perspective, you will have a sound grasp of key engineering principles, have some knowledge of relevant software packages ideally including AutoCAD, Micro Drainage and PDS. In addition;

  • You will be able to show that you have strong communication and personal effectiveness skills, with the ability build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.
  • An aptitude to effectively delegate responsibility to others and act in a mentoring role to less experienced staff.
  • An ability to act in an outward facing capacity as BWB’s representative in dealings with regulators and our clients.
