Leonardo’s Graduate Development Programme offers you a permanent position to develop your knowledge and skills in our innovative and practical environment. In addition to working with our highly skilled engineers and business professionals, you will complete a 2 year formal training programme to develop the skills you require to be a leading technical or business professional of the future.

Our 2 year Graduate Programme

On joining the Leonardo graduate programme, you will be provided with a wealth of development opportunities in both virtual and applied working environments. On our programme you will engage with challenging and exciting project work, and deliver innovative business or technical solutions as part of a team of subject matter experts. Throughout the programme you will receive coaching and support from your team to achieve your objectives as well as your personal development goals. 

You will gain a wide array of experience in your day to day role, however as part of the programme you will also complete a number of development modules and activities over a two year period. These modules and activities are designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to realise your full potential. How this role fits in

Design Integrity Engineering is an independent technical and governance organisation established within Leonardo to work across the business to establish the basis of product certification and assure that the company’s Products meet the legislative and regulatory requirements for their intended use.

What you will do

Role description

Design Integrity Engineering provides subject matter expertise and advice to Project Teams to assure that a product meets the business and customer's expectations for safety, security, performance and durability (robustness) over the life of the product. Particularly Design Integrity Engineering provides a focus for configuration management, producibility and defect prevention in the design and development phases of the Product life cycle.

The role will provide an excellent opportunity to be part of the team providing independent oversight and technical expertise to a wide variety of engineering projects, providing exposure to legislative, certification and compliance environments that impact all facets of product design.

The role will include supporting the Design Integrity group with the execution of their technical governance activities across the following business areas:

  • Electronic Warfare
  • Integrated Sensing & Protection
  • Major Air Programmes
  • Radar & Advanced Targeting
  • Customer Support & Service Solutions

The portfolio of products encompasses Land, Sea and Air environments, from early conceptual design to complex in service support contracts.

The role will provide the opportunity work closely with design teams, providing guidance throughout the design lifecycle helping teams understand internal and external governance requirements. The role will provide insight into how the changing legislative environment influences different product life cycles.

In addition, the opportunity to participate in key forums, committees and working groups will provide an invaluable experience in how an effective engineering governance organisation is structured and continuously maintains competence.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Assist with management of Design Integrity policy and processes, ensuring the correct reference information is accessible to project teams.
  • Manage Engineering Governance intranet area; ensuring data is accurate, useful and available to teams.
  • Participate in governance committees and working groups.
  • Support Product Maturity Design Reviews across the business.
  • Provide conduit for communication across the business areas via Design Integrity.

What we are looking for


Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business, but may need to be to a higher level for this particular role due to the nature of the projects and or programmes that the role will be supporting.


All of our roles require (a) a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as a MSc or PhD. In all cases the subject should be engineering, mathematics, physics or another relevant STEM discipline.

Highly desirable

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, show ability to gain trust and respect.
  • Self-motivated, able to work with suitable direction in a collaborative manner.
  • Some knowledge of general engineering life cycle.
  • Working towards meeting the requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer
