The Opportunity

Do you want to work on real-time projects alongside leading scientists and engineers within a globally renowned company? Leonardo is an international leader in electronic and information technologies for defence systems, aerospace, data, infrastructures, land security and protection, and sustainable ’smart’ solutions.

Exciting early career opportunities at Leonardo

Your story starts here.

We are a continually expanding company, offering exciting opportunities to talented individuals who want to work at the forefront of technology. With the majority of our engineers having chartered status, you can look forward to working with highly skilled professionals that are passionate about their work.

Leonardo’s Fast Track Programme offers you a permanent position to develop your knowledge and skills in our innovative and practical environment. In addition to working with our highly skilled engineers and business professionals, you will complete a 12 month programme to develop the skills you require to be a leading technical or business professional of the future.

Our 12 month Fast Track Programme

You will be provided with a wealth of development opportunities in both virtual and applied working environments.  On our programme you will engage with challenging and exciting project work and deliver innovative business or technical solutions as part of a team of subject matter experts. Throughout the programme you will receive coaching and support from your team to achieve your objectives as well as your personal development goals.

You will gain a wide array of experience in your day to day role and work in Integrated Project Teams to deliver exciting and innovative technical solutions. We are committed to developing our graduates into leading technical or business professionals, and as such we will also support you through your preferred route for Chartership.

At Leonardo we value individuals who continuously demonstrate a dedication to their personal development, and this is no different for our graduates. We have partnered with Coursera, the world leading online training platform that offers around 4,000 courses you can sign up to, according to your professional and personal interests. Self-directed learning thrives in this environment. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are willing to take on a challenge to fill our graduate roles, and we will demand a high degree of customer focus and work performance from you in order to meet our operational challenges.

At Leonardo, we are strongly committed to supporting all our people, and, as society and the environment we work in changes, our approach to Inclusion and Diversity continues to evolve and adapt to reflect this. A culture of inclusion goes on to create an environment for greater collaboration, innovation and opportunities to develop as an organisation. If you are willing and able to commit to giving your best performance, you will find Leonardo a very rewarding place to work!

What you will do

At Leonardo, we have a fantastic new opportunity for a Finance Graduate. Leonardo is a global high-tech company and one of the key players in Aerospace, Defence and Security. Headquartered in Italy, Leonardo has over 45,000 employees, of which 7,000 are based in the UK.

Finance is of critical importance to all companies and no less so at Leonardo. In our programme there are 3 areas of Finance where you will gain experience as you work towards your CIMA or ACCA qualification.

  • Central Finance
  • Project Finance
  • Management Accounting & Reporting

We would also like you to gain this experience in our different businesses and geographical locations in the UK eg. Helicopters, Electronics, Cyber and our Corporate office, so full mobility flexibility to take advantage of this opportunity is important.

The Graduate Programme includes a placement at each of our Edinburgh, Luton and Yeovil sites, plus one placement at one of our other UK sites.

During your placement we will expect you to study towards your CIMA or ACCA qualification. The company will support you in distance learning and revision courses. We are looking to develop business partners who specialise in finance, who can apply their skills to a wide variety of situations.

All of the above should allow you to successfully complete your record of experience (logbook) and achieve Chartered status.

The central finance placement will give you experience working in the financial accounting, taxation and treasury departments.

You will learn about the fundamental accounting principles, application of accounting standards and governance in financial accounting. In the tax department you will gain experience in UK & overseas tax, employee tax, VAT, Corporation tax, R&D / patent box claims, tax credits and transfer pricing. While in treasury you will learn about foreign exchange, bonds/guarantees, export finance, banking relationships and cash management

The Project finance role is instrumental in the business decision-making and execution process. You will work in the Integrated Project Team (IPT) as an objective business partner.

In this role you will work in a Line of Business (LoB) as part of a Project or Business area IPT. Within the IPT you will work with the programme managers and their functional teams (commercial, engineering, manufacturing, procurement, planning, sales & marketing). Projects are responsible for delivery and execution. They create value for us and our customers as we seek to provide not just products but services and integrated solutions to our existing and prospective client base. Each “Line of Business” in Leonardo has their own project finance team.

Role responsibilities will be assigned and you will be expected to contribute and add value to the business and finance department in each of your placements. These responsibilities, outcomes and objectives will be agreed with you as you start each placement.

What we are looking for

It is your responsibility to pass all of your exams, complete your logbook and gain the CIMA qualification at the end of the 3 year time period. We will assign you a mentor, support you with distance learning and revision courses, but it is your responsibility to invest your personal time in gaining the qualification.

There are 2 positions, one person will be based at our Luton office and the other at any of the remaining UK sites.

Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business which includes having a minimum of 5 years permanent residency in the UK.

All of our roles require (a) a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as a MSc or PhD. In all cases the subject should be finance or business related subjects, but not essential.
