Summer Placement Supportability Engineering

Physics, Maths, Electronic, Electrical.

Job Description:

Exciting early career opportunities at Leonardo
Your story starts here.

Do you want to work on real-time projects alongside leading scientists and engineers within a globally renowned company?

Leonardo is an international leader in electronic and information technologies for defence systems, aerospace, data, infrastructures, land security and protection, and sustainable ’smart’ solutions.

We are a continually expanding company, offering exciting opportunities to talented individuals who want to work at the forefront of technology. With the majority of our engineers having chartered status, you can look forward to working with highly skilled professionals that are passionate about their work.

Leonardo’s Summer Placement Programme offers you a paid placement to develop your knowledge and skills in our innovative and practical environment.

In addition to working with our highly skilled engineers and business professionals, successful completion of a Summer Placement can often lead to an offer for a permanent graduate position.

The 13-week Summer Industrial Placement Programme

We have created a programme across our UK sites that not only increases your technical skills, but gives you the opportunity to work on meaningful real life projects, alongside experienced engineers and graduates across our business.

You will receive coaching and support to achieve your personal goals and work in multidisciplinary teams to gain as much experience across the product lifecycle from your time in industry as possible. Our ultimate aim is to see you through your undergrad years and successful placements will result in an offer to return for further placements or for an offer on our Graduate Development programme.

This programme is remunerated £25,000 per annum.

What you’ll do as a Summer Placement Supportability Engineer

Supportability Engineers are integral to a product’s lifecycle: from concept and initial design, through production, and into in-service support.

They analyse and report on the Reliability, Maintainability and Testability (RMT) of a product and advise on design and development in order to satisfy customer specifications. Supportability Engineering are the experts in Root Cause Analysis and are integral during production when manufacturing defects are observed.

As a Summer Placement Supportability Engineer, you will contribute to a real ongoing project within the department alongside experienced engineers who will provide training, mentoring and guidance. You will be exposed to real-world engineering and learn about the use of Supportability processes and tools.

In Edinburgh, Supportability Engineering are directly involved with:

  • IRCM (Infra-Red Counter Measures) Systems
  • Laser Target Designator and Laser Ranging Systems
  • Eurofighter Typhoon Radar
  • SAAB Gripen Radar
  • Surveillance AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) Radars
  • The Global Combat Air Programme

Examples of summer placement projects include:

  • Physics of Failure & Finite Element Analysis – an evaluation of Ansys Sherlock in addition to experience of other tools within Ansys suite
  • Electronics Reliability Analysis - Evaluating Radar PCAs for Reliability, Maintainability, and Testability
  • Lead Free & Materials Science – design, development and production support and interaction with engineers in a variety of functions and roles
  • Data Analytics – producing reports using analysis from Production and Field Defect Data

What we need from you

All of our Summer Placement roles require you to be currently studying a relevant degree discipline such as Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or other STEM subject degrees.

All successful candidates must be returning to university after their Summer Placement, i.e. not in their final year.

In addition to this, we would be interested in hearing from you if you have experience or an interest in:

  • Reliability or Safety of electronic products
  • Problem solving within a project team
  • Relevant project work and/or placements in industry (beneficial but not essential)
  • Communicating to engineers and non-engineers from a variety of different backgrounds

Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business which includes having a minimum of five years permanent residency in the UK.
