Non-Regulated Business, Interconnectors Graduate Programme

To apply for this programme you'll need to be on track for a 2.2 degree classification or above in: Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

This programme would be appropriate for a graduate that has expressed a desire to develop their knowledge of site operations and HVDC technology.

Interconnectors connect countries’ electricity grids, allowing the import and export of electricity. For the UK, these are large subsea cables. National Grid’s Non-Regulated Businesses Interconnectors is a relatively small team covering all disciplines. As well as Interconnectors providing National Grid with a healthy revenue stream, successful operation of these interconnectors also offers the GB system operator a greater diversity of supply. NRB is responsible for the operation of the two existing interconnectors, Interconnexion France-Angleterre (IFA) and BritNed Development Ltd.

Programme overview

This is an exciting opportunity for committed, enthusiastic graduates eager to gain experience of working in a wide range of activities including operating and maintaining HVDC converter station and its assets, working as part of the future, enabling availability and longevity for the younger interconnection schemes.

This role will also provide a unique opportunity to develop an individual’s leadership skills, working in an international environment developing professional relationships with people from different cultures both internally, as well as externally with our suppliers and partners.

Below are some of the transferable skills that you can expect to gain:

  • Appreciation of the safety, health, environmental, security and quality aspects that apply to the management of an interconnector business and HV equipment in general.
  • An understanding of the range of technologies being employed within the operational interconnector projects, specifically
  • HVDC as an integral part of the GB Transmission System.
  • Experience of joint venture agreements and the associated working environments.
  • An awareness of cultural challenges that underpin commercial negotiations with current and prospective international partner organisations.

Over the course of the six months in the team, you will gain a wide-ranging experience of the ever-evolving European energy market as well as the growing Non-Regulated Businesses directorate, where the drive for commercial profitability, operational availability/efficiency and regulatory optimisation is key.

You will be given a heightened level of responsibility for project management whilst gaining exposure to the commercial, legal and financial areas of the operational interconnectors’ portfolio businesses, in line with your development needs.
