Job facts

At Roche, we believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

This internship is offered within the Personalised Healthcare (PHC) department at Roche, in partnership with Biostatistics.

In PHC, we leverage real world healthcare data and appropriate analytical techniques to identify the right drug for the right patient at the right time, in order to maximise the value of our products for patients, and for the business.

In Biostatistics, as strategic partners in drug development, we apply our drug development and statistical expertise to the design of clinical development plans, clinical studies, and non-clinical experiments.

As an intern, you will have access to both groups, gaining exposure to individuals with expertise across the development pipeline and in both real world and clinical trial data. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the pharmaceutical industry.

You will undertake a three month long research project. At the end of your internship you will be expected to summarise the outcome of your work in a written report and give a short presentation in one of our departmental meetings. There is also the possibility of presenting your work at an external meeting.

The research project will involve analysing statistical models for predicting treatment outcomes for oncology patients from two datasets. The two datasets represent (1) real world oncology clinic data, and (2) harmonised data from 10 clinical trials. Data modalities include clinical, laboratory, RNA-seq and vital measurements.

As an intern you will focus on optimising features of the statistical modelling, including::

  • What effect sample size and validation strategy have on the performance of the final fitted model
  • How parsimony and complexity of the different models relates to performance, to understand the trade-off between model interpretability and model performance
  • You will have the opportunity to guide the direction of the project within the scope defined above.

Who you are

You are a student enrolled on a Master’s or PhD degree course, with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics (or any other degree with a strong applied statistical aspect).

Practical experience of programming in R or Python is required, as is strong knowledge of statistical and/or machine learning models. You must have good communication skills in English.

The internship will start between June and August 2019 and run for three months. Please clearly indicate your availability in your cover letter.
