At a Brunel university networking event in April 2018, Chioma “Chichi” Ezenwa came across Sparta Global. Following a recommendation from university colleagues, Chichi headed to the event to consider her next steps after graduation. Having completed her degree in Computer Science, Chichi joined the Sparta Academy and is now well on her way to a lucrative career in tech…

How did you first engage with Sparta Global?

I was attending Brunel University London and studying Information Systems and Management when I first engaged with Sparta global at one of the networking and recruitment events.

The representative from Sparta was very enthusiastic and passionate when speaking about the career opportunities Sparta Global offers. She introduced herself as Gaia Caruso (talent & partnerships consultant) and made the effort to engage with all students and came across very positively. Gaia also had leaflets ready to hand out and provided lots of useful information. Overall her positive attitude was a big motivation for me to apply, it made me keen and eager to attend one of Sparta’s assessment days.

Why did you decide to get into tech? Did Sparta help you navigate that decision?

I have always been passionate about technology because of its ability to make complex every day tasks simpler, while potentially saving people time and money. I also wanted to challenge myself as a woman in tech in the hope I can set an example for young girls from minority backgrounds looking to get into the industry.

Sparta helped me navigate this decision by exposing me to the vast and exciting landscape of technology today. With key information about their organisation and how they operate, I became more knowledgeable about the huge opportunities at my disposal with diverse job roles ranging from a data analyst to software tester or product developer. Sparta global also highlighted the demand that exists for IT professionals across the various industries in the UK. With this insight I am assured there will always be demand for technology graduates like me in the UK. I am confident it is a great career path to follow!

How was your experience going through the recruitment process at Sparta Global?

The recruitment process was well structured - it was clear a lot of planning had gone into it as the progress from one step to the next was seamless!

I was invited for an assessment day at the Richmond Academy and thoroughly enjoyed working on various activities with other graduates. It gave me the opportunity to showcase my interpersonal, analytical and communication skills. I then took part in a one-to-one interview with Sparta consultant, Bethany (Nicholls). She made me feel very relaxed and comfortable while she tried to get to know me better and overall it was a very pleasant experience. I didn’t have to wait long to know if I was successful or not either, I was contacted after a few days and informed that I was!

Now you’re in, what are you most excited about doing/learning at the Academy?

I applied to join the Business stream to study Business and Project Management and I am most excited to take part in the two-week final project. I know this will give me the opportunity to get some real-life industry experience and put into practice everything I have been taught.

What advice would you give to current university students who are looking for their first role in industry?

Sparta global has a well-structured and strategic programme that can set you up for success in the tech industry. You even have the opportunity to secure your first role within a huge organisation you may not otherwise have had access to.
