Oxford Fiber is a small high-technology company based in Rugby. We are deeply involved in connectivity of optical fiber and we are a world-leader in the design and manufacture of optical fiber cleavers. These are the wire cutters which prepare the ends of the optical fiber and are used to install optical fiber for use in high speed broadband.
We have recently launched a fiber cleaver with our main customer, a major US multinational. This has brought about a major increase in turnover. We aim to double production of our existing fiber cleavers and plan to extend our product range further by customer-focused development work. We are also developing new products and processes for connectorising optical fibers.
You will begin by assisting in the production of our primary products, gaining a deep insight into the technology.
You will progress to designing and developing new products and become responsible for important parts of our business. You will work with optical microscopy and processing lasers and will come to specialise in optical fibers, glass and crystal technology and plastic processing.
You will work with CAD design tools, 3-D plastic printing, etc. further to professionalise existing products and projects and to develop new products in response to customer requirements. There may be interaction with University of Warwick and international travel.
You will be carrying out development work in a small, focused development team. The role will be multi-skilled. Familiarity with 3-D CAD design is essential.
This opportunity will suit graduate Mechanical Engineers, Material Scientists, Physicists or other technical disciplines. You should be expecting to secure or hold a good degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar. An interest in fiber optics would be preferred but not essential.
You should also have a work permit/British/EU national.
You will expect to work towards a further professional qualification such as Chartered Engineer.
The company is based in Rugby, close to the train station. Working hours are 8.00am – 4.15pm (including 45minutes lunch break) – or as agreed with the company.
