Job Description

As an RF engineer in the MKS section, you will participate in the measurement campaign performed on the RF power systems in the LHC and Linac 4 accelerators, in order to improve the current performances of the high power RF systems.

You will take part in the testing of the klystron-based power stations for the CERN accelerator complex, including preparation of the test stand, drafting of procedures, setting up of the measurement tools, and helping to identify needs and requirements of the installation.

You will also be involved in the measurement and analysis of performance of the new high efficiency klystron prototype needed to generate the power to accelerate the higher charge beam of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC).

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Experience in carrying out measurements, diagnostics and calibrations on RF equipment, using vector network analysers, RF power meters, spectrum analysers.
  • Knowledge of microwave concepts like S-parameters, waveguides and their modes, resonators and their modes, circulators, gain, efficiency, coupling, directivity, frequency/time domain.
  • Familiarity with open source scientific programming to develop high level measurement/analysis applications would be an advantage.
  • Experience with high voltage devices and pulsed power engineering would be an advantage.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Electronics engineering/physics (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6,212 and 6,828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
