I first found out about Capital One when they sponsored a Hackathon. I was studying Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield, and knew I wanted to explore fields that combined both software and hardware.
Their graduate scheme was one of the few that offered the opportunity to explore different roles within Software Engineering. It was perfect for me – I’ve been able to experiment with varied technologies and discover what I really love. I think of it as a career playground where you get to challenge and push yourself.
On a daily basis, you’re doing real work and getting to stretch yourself. Ultimately, we’re adding features to our products that empower customers. I’ve also been able to present our work to the wider team and senior management, which is really rewarding.
It’s great to be able to use all my skills too - from programming to system design thinking, to communications and building presentations There’s no such thing as a typical day - I could be programming to add features or fix bugs, working with AWS technologies, brainstorming with my team, or getting in some extra professional development.
The team here are all supportive, but personally I’m particularly inspired by Joseph Soule. He’s a great advocate of embracing technology at Capital One and comes across as a humble person. His life lessons are also motivating, and I always take away something new when he talks to the engineering teams.
