Gradcracker Insight - Hints and Tips from Hannah at Frazer-Nash

We are seeking ambitious high calibre graduate and post-graduate engineers to join one of our Maritime focussed teams where we have a wide range of current and future exciting opportunities on offer for you to explore.

Team information

As a Graduate Maritime Engineer you will have the opportunity to join one of several exciting teams working in the marine industry:

  • Naval Safety and Assurance (Bristol or Plymouth)
  • Marine Technology (Bristol)
  • Naval Nuclear Assurance (Plymouth)

At Frazer-Nash we understand each person is unique and it is our aim to help guide you into the team and business area that is the best fit for you. So, if you have a strong desire or interest for a particular team described above, please let us know within your covering letter and application.

What you’ll be doing at Frazer-Nash?

Frazer-Nash offers excellent opportunities for engineering/science graduates and post-graduates to experience challenging and interesting work that will make a real difference in the world. Whilst this role is primarily maritime focussed, you will have the chance to use your skills and talents working across a diverse range of multi-disciplinary projects and industries, helping us deliver a safe and secure world against a backdrop of rapidly evolving technology, where natural resources are conserved, and clean energy is available to all.

Below are just a few recent examples of projects that our Maritime teams have been working on, to give you a flavour of the type of work you will have the opportunity to get involved in:

  • Helping the Ministry of Defence understand the safety implications of operating submarines in the extreme weather conditions in arctic waters;
  • Providing Safety Management expertise to Babcock in support of the Royal Navy’s Type 31 programme;
  • Embedding a Naval Architect in a MoD project team to help develop the early concept design for a future attack submarine;

Provision of Quality Management advice to a commercial shipping company to support their development of a prototype shaft line design for a foreign Navy.

Working within a consultancy environment offers a unique opportunity to quickly assimilate a breadth and depth of experience that you just won’t find elsewhere.

You'll be able to develop your technical knowledge at each step of the CADMID lifecycle, from finding the missing piece of the design puzzle, to helping manage vessel build and delivery, solving real-time in-service issues, and helping our clients overcome ever more complex material degradation and ageing issues as vessels near the end of their design life.

At Frazer-Nash we think it is important that you gain exposure to the full project lifecycle and all aspects of our business. To this effect, as part of helping you develop your technical and consultancy skills, you will be given the opportunity to develop proposals, bid for work, produce technical work as part of a project team and develop Project Management skills. We will also help you to expand your network and establish strong working relationships by giving you the opportunity to collaborate with people from across our organisation, as well as liaising directly with our clients.

What you’ll need?

Our Maritime teams are interested in hearing from ambitious, dynamic, high calibre graduate engineers/scientists who share our vision and want to kick start their career in the maritime sector. You should have a genuine enthusiasm for engineering, in particular the maritime sector, and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for problem solving and a willingness to take on new challenges.

The work we do is technically demanding and, to this effect, you should have an excellent academic record in a relevant subject. As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2:1 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Whilst not exclusive for this role, the following are some of the degree courses that we have identified as of particular interest to us:

  • Naval Architecture
  • Marine Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Ship Science
