Frazer-Nash’s Defence Business Unit delivers both large frameworks and small bespoke projects that make a difference to the world. Our defence focused teams solve complex problems related to the design, analysis, manufacture, assurance and in-service support of nuclear components for Submarine Nuclear Plants and Submarine Nuclear Facilities.

By joining our teams, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects that ensure the continued safe operation and longevity of existing nuclear assets, support the safe decommissioning of nuclear plants and facilities. There are also opportunities to support other exciting new nuclear technologies such as SMRs. These activities are essential for continued safe operation and to support the UK’s ambition to achieve net zero by 2050.

You will be involved in the full design life-cycle of projects, providing advice and developing practical solutions to engineering problems for our clients across the UK. As part of this, it will be necessary to liaise and work with operators, designers, other customers, and technical experts within Frazer-Nash, building strong and enduring working relationships.

What you’ll be doing at Frazer-Nash?

Working within a consultancy environment offers the chance to experience a wide variety of diverse projects; you'll be given the opportunity to develop yourself at each step of the project lifecycle, from winning work to helping solve complex technical problems, managing project delivery, and having the opportunity to work directly with clients.

The types of projects you could find yourself working on include;

  • Development of component and system design justifications including understanding functional and performance requirements and planning and undertaking Verification and Validation methods (e.g. Testing, Analysis, Demonstration).
  • The stress analysis of key nuclear components through tools such as hand calculations, finite element analysis, fracture mechanics or design code assessments. A typical stress analysis problem may involve a routine maintenance or inspection identifying a nuclear component operating outside its design intent. We would work closely with the client to understand the problem and propose a way to best solve it. We would undertake the required analysis, ensuring we deliver to the time, cost and quality expectations, whilst keeping the client up to date with progress. The outcome from the work would be either demonstrating the component is acceptable for continued operation, or we would recommend a maintenance, repair or replacement strategy.
  • Reviewing, evaluating, and sentencing non-compliance to design intent of nuclear components and systems. This may be across different stages of the lifecycle including manufacture, build/construction, commissioning and in-service.
  • Periodic review of the safety of nuclear plant and facilities through the review of mechanical system changes, the effects of ageing mechanisms and the definition of operating and maintenance procedures.

These projects are often used to substantiate safety cases, so an interest in or some knowledge of nuclear safety is advantageous.

A lot of our work comes from repeat business and hence you will be seeking to build enduring working relationships with key clients. This means you will be spending some time on clients sites, which is a great opportunity to get hands on experience with plant and to see first hand the components you will be analysing.

What you’ll need?

We are interested in hearing from excellent candidates who want to work in the nuclear field. As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2:1 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. The following are some of the degree courses identified as of interest, however we are open to hear from graduates of different subjects who are interested in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • General Engineering

Having some experience of, but most importantly a passion for, mechanical engineering and its disciplines is required. As demonstrated in the project examples, this role will offer broad engineering knowledge across a range of disciplines, with the opportunity to specialise in the future.

We are also looking to see how you are organised and methodical in your approach when meeting deadlines and managing internal and external requirements, and how you seek to see the bigger picture in the roles you undertake.

The nature of our work means that we require staff to access Government material, it is therefore necessary for all of our employees to gain appropriate security clearance. We will apply for clearance if you have successfully been selected for a position, and we will obtain if we can successfully gain full clearance on your behalf based on the content of your application.
