There are many barriers to using these systems in the real world, which we believe are not being considered enough. The Assured Autonomous Systems (AAS) team was formed around this belief.

We still seek to develop novel autonomous systems for a better world. We differentiate ourselves through our understanding of the need for assurance in these systems to enable them to operate safely. The AAS team has the expertise and understanding to build assurance into our systems from the outset. We are working with our customers, users and regulators towards the goal of assured autonomous systems.

The AAS team works closely with customers and users, ensuring we are solving real problems in a way that can be deployed in real situations. This means the systems we develop offer a tangible benefit, which is a strong motivator for us. What you’ll be doing at Frazer-Nash?

This role offers a unique opportunity to work on the cutting edge of technology with a clearly defined need. We often work on projects which develop ideas into live system demonstrations in 12 months or less. This rapid development cycle can only succeed with a team which has the skills and abilities to understand and solve unexpected challenges. Although this can be difficult, the rewards are immense. The team has grown strong together and we have a reputation for delivering above and beyond expectations. To achieve this, you will be:

  • Working with customers and users to understand their needs and constraints, developing concepts and methods within these constraints which could solve their problems.
  • Researching and understanding the current state of the art to select the best set of technologies to apply to the problem.
  • Developing and integrating the solutions to work in simulations and on physical platforms to characterise and develop performance.
  • Supporting trials and demonstrations to customers and users.

The projects we undertake are diverse, covering a wide range of autonomous systems. In addition to working on technical development, you will have the opportunity to identify and bid for new work, manage projects and develop customer relationships.

What you’ll need?

We are interested in candidates with an understanding of the broad discipline of autonomy and autonomous systems, with a deeper specialisation in some of the key skills. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong fundamental engineering skills, interest and understanding of the topic and a motivation to develop and learn. They will be comfortable with open challenges, systematically working through the problems and identifying the best solution. Strong teamworking and great communication are essential. We understand and expect that you will need to learn new skills; we will provide plenty of development opportunities and support to enable you to do so.

A degree in the subjects below or similar is desirable:

  • Computer Science/Software Engineering
  • Control/Automation Engineering
  • Electronics/Electrical Engineering
  • Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Physics
  • Robotics

Ideally, you would also be able to demonstrate skills, experience or interest covering some or all of these areas:

  • Projects working with autonomous systems
  • Problem identification, analysis and solving
  • Working in groups and teams
  • Embedded systems
  • Electronics
  • Software development
  • Control systems
  • Sensor selection/design

Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-­Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting. Candidates will be required to be UK national’s who are resident in the UK to be eligible to apply.
