Help keep taps flowing and toilets flushing across the North West

At United Utilities, we’re not only essential service providers to over 7 million customers across the region but we’re also at the forefront of tackling some of the biggest climate and environmental challenges in a generation.

We're looking forward to seeing you around...

Meet some of our people who keep the water flowing for our 7 million customers and find out what a career with us can offer you.

All our people are essential in achieving our net zero targets and creating a more resilient North West.

It's a big job and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly for our customers. From operating our pipes and improving water quality, to embracing new technologies and safeguarding the local environment – whether you're in our head office or out on site, there's always plenty going on.

Our internship programmes will give you the opportunity to learn first-hand how we make this happen.

We have been awarded with a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award, recognising the Best Places to Work in 2020. We were ranked #19 company in the UK, based solely on the input of employees, who provide feedback on their jobs, work environments and companies on Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest job and recruiting sites.

You will be joining the United Utilities family of over 5,000 employees who all help to provide great service for our 7 million customers.

Our internship programmes will give you the opportunity to learn first-hand how we make this happen. Our undergraduate and graduate programmes are key to helping us support customers.

Role Overview

In the Engineering department the successful students will join a large team working on real business projects, carrying out a variety of engineering tasks.

There is an opportunity to develop your mechanical engineering skills whilst gaining real world experience working alongside technical specialists and operational engineers solving problems that could impact customers and the environment.

You will gain an understanding of a wide range of projects from strategic level Price Review, to exploring new innovative technologies, design & asset supportability of mechanical assets around the whole asset management lifecycle. You will gain experience looking at the bioresources, wastewater & water areas of the business.

Working alongside other graduates you will see how United Utilities operate their accredited IMechE MPDS scheme, including other graduate activities.

You will benefit from the shared knowledge within the UU Mechanical Engineering & UU Asset Supportability Teams and expertise of working with colleagues across the wider Engineering disciplines whilst also developing your own specialist skills and providing a valuable contribution to the team.

We will help you gain an understanding of the projects being undertaken by United Utilities and the methods used to deliver them. Specific tasks may be assigned during this time. You will be accountable for delivering these with the support of experienced engineers and you line manager.

During your 12 month Internship you may also be given the opportunity to visit some our sites. You'll see how we carefully produce clean safe drinking water and how we treat wastewater in order to release it safely back in to the environment.

You will also get the opportunity to mix with our current graduates who can share experiences, tips and guidance with you for the next steps in your career.

You get 26 days' holiday to take during your placement, and at our fantastic Lingley Mere site we have an onsite gym, coffee shops and other great facilities.
