Commercial Manager

"nmcn invests heavily in training, which is a great platform to launch your development."

How long have you been working with nmcn?

I joined 2nd October 2006, so it’s now been 12 years.

Have you had the opportunity to experience other roles within the company?

Yes. I initially joined the company as Estimating Assistant in the Civils department. I then started my commercial career as Assistant Quantity Surveyor in 2010 and began Quantity Surveying in Building in 2012.

What attracted you to nmcn?

My family. My dad was speaking to my then boyfriend about an opportunity with a company that prides itself on educating and developing young people and that it would be a fantastic opportunity to grow in an ever-building environment. Even though I wasn’t thinking about a career change at the time I applied for the role and the rest is history!

What is your career highlight so far?

Working for a company that my Grandpa helped establish. Jim Horabin set up the Civil side of the business in 1970. When I joined in 2006, there were still employees that worked with him who wished to share their memories of him with me. It is an honour to work for a company with such a rich history, and hopefully one where we can carry that legacy forward.

How has nmcn played a role in your long-term career development?

nmcn paid for me to get a degree at Nottingham Trent University when I first joined the company. I went on a part time basis, working four days a week. Throughout my time here I have also achieved ILM Level 3 and currently on ILM Level 5 to develop my leadership and management skills. I’ve also been exposed to a great deal of change and growth within the company that has given me a great deal of experience.

How did you get to your current role? How did you get to where you are today?

With a lot of hard work and dedication! The Building department reformed in 2013, which meant there were few of us. We needed to be strong and determined to ensure that the department grew into a successful business unit for the company. It gave me a lot of exposure early on in my career and nmcn gave me the support required to develop into a Commercial Manager.

What tips would you give to people looking to apply for jobs at nmcn?

Be yourself. We’re looking for team players, those that co-operate and work collaboratively with their co-workers.

Would you recommend a career with nmcn?

100%. Especially if you’re just starting out. nmcn invests heavily in training, which is a great platform to launch your development.
