Carpmaels & Ransford: Career Insights

Are you eager to use your knowledge of science or technology outside the world of academia and the lab? Intellectual Property law demands the application of scientific and technical knowledge in a commercial environment, providing a diverse and challenging, yet intellectually stimulating and rewarding career.

We are delighted to be hosting our annual Open Day on 1st September 2022.

If you're interested in a career outside of the lab, which allows you to use your scientific knowledge every day, the event will provide you with an exciting insight into the career of a patent attorney.

You will hear from a variety of people at different stages of their career journeys from across our practice groups, and will have lots of opportunity to ask questions throughout the day. In an informal setting, the event provides an invaluable opportunity to explore the profession and discover more about life at the firm.

In addition to presentations, panel sessions and an interactive activity, you will receive helpful hints and tips for joining the profession. Typically, we welcome 30 students to the event, which is hosted in our central London office. We are happy to offer financial support towards travel expenses.

Who should apply?

To train as a patent attorney, you must have a STEM degree in a relevant technical discipline. We would like to hear from exceptional students who possess a strong first degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) or PhD in a relevant technical discipline such as molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and immunology.

Please note that preference is given to individuals in their penultimate and final year of study.

You will be working towards, or have obtained, an excellent first degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) complemented by strong A Levels (typically 3 at grade A or equivalent) and a passion for science and technology. With an excellent command of both written and spoken English and a meticulous eye for detail, you enjoy analysing and conceptualising complex matters, with a passion and aptitude for problem solving.

We are proud to be using Rare Recruitment's Contextual Recruitment System (CRS) which allows us to consider your achievements in the context in which they were gained. We understand that not every candidate’s achievements look the same on paper – and we want to recruit the best people, from every background.

As we receive a high level of interest in the event, we encourage those who have been unsuccessful to apply for future opportunities. This includes our summer internship and trainee patent attorney programmes.

We are proud of our inclusive culture where individual differences are celebrated, and we are committed to providing equal opportunities to all employees and job applicants. We do not tolerate discrimination either directly or indirectly on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital or civil partnership status, age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, or any other characteristic protected by law. Our approach is embodied in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, as well as our diversity and inclusion programmes.

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.

(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
