Our specialist teams are led by practitioners who have been at the forefront of the industry for years, acting in landmark cases before the EPO and the national courts of Europe.

Carpmaels & Ransford: Career Insights

Are you eager to use your knowledge of science or technology outside the world of academia and the lab? Intellectual Property law demands the application of scientific and technical knowledge in a commercial environment, providing a diverse and challenging, yet intellectually stimulating and rewarding career.

We hire talented and passionate people who think creatively and enjoy a challenge. Working collaboratively, we share our knowledge and experience across teams, actively learning from each other in a friendly and sociable environment.

We are passionate about creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. Diversity of thought is vital to our business; it’s how we approach challenges differently and offer our clients creative and original solutions. Through our work with organisations such as IP Inclusive, Stonewall and Business in the Community via the Race at Work Charter, we are putting the right steps in place to make sure that all our people feel supported and empowered to be themselves.

A healthy work/life balance is very important to us and we run regular wellbeing events in addition to the large number of clubs and social activities that are available to everyone at the firm.  We are also enthusiastic supporters of our local community through partnerships with the Social Mobility Foundation and Holborn Community Association.

We have a top-rated trainee attorney programme and offer exceptional training and support for obtaining UK and EQE qualifications and beyond.

What will you be doing?

Our three day, fully paid summer insight programme will commence in July 2023 (date TBC) and will take place in our central London office. We also offer generous support towards travel and accommodations costs.

We will provide you with seminars, case studies, work shadowing and practical exercises. You will also get to experience our social side, through meeting and getting to know a variety of people across the firm. We offer all programme participants a guaranteed first stage trainee patent attorney interview, which will take place on the final day of the programme or soon after.

What are we looking for?

In order to enter the patent profession, it is a key requirement to have a STEM degree.

Preference is given to candidates who are looking to begin a full-time graduate role in autumn 2024, and we welcome applications from individuals who have undertaken further study, including PhDs.

You will be working towards, or have obtained, an excellent first degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) complemented by strong A Levels (typically 3 at grade A or equivalent) and a passion for science and technology. With an excellent command of both written and spoken English and a meticulous eye for detail, you enjoy analysing and conceptualising complex matters, with an enthusiasm and aptitude for problem solving.

We are proud to be using Rare Recruitment's Contextual Recruitment System (CRS) which allows us to consider your achievements in the context in which they were gained. We understand that not every candidate's achievements look the same on paper - and we want to recruit the best people, from every background.

Following the closing date of 5th March 2023, successful applicants will be invited to complete a short, pre-recorded video interview. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to attend a virtual interview with a partner and senior associate.

Please note that the number of spaces on the internship is limited. If your application is unsuccessful, please don’t be discouraged from applying to our other opportunities, including trainee positions and insight events.

We are proud of our inclusive culture where individual differences are celebrated, and we are committed to providing equal opportunities to all employees and job applicants. We do not tolerate discrimination either directly or indirectly on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital or civil partnership status, age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, or any other characteristic protected by law.  Our approach is embodied in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, as well as our diversity and inclusion programmes.

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.
