Sims Metal Management - 100 years strong

Celebrating our 100th year in business in 2017, Sims Metal Management's future is focused on optimisation and a strong dedication to sustainability and the environment.

What you’ll be doing

The Graduate Development Programme has two paths: Operations or Engineering. In this structured, rotational development programme, you will be exposed to all aspects of the metals recycling industry that relate to the path you choose.
Across both paths you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of capital projects, new equipment installation/commissioning, and continuous/process improvement initiatives across our UK operations.

Through these projects/rotations, you will gain exposure to, and knowledge about, the various functional departments within SMM, such as engineering, production, logistics, safety and finance. This integrated approach will provide diverse experiences across the work environments at SMM, including significant time working outside with the operational teams and developing experience through proximity to our complex processing equipment.

Throughout this programme, you will receive interactive, hands-on training, as well as a series of blended learning modules that will help develop and strengthen your professional knowledge and skills.

While participating in the Graduate Development Programme, you will be paired with a mentor who will provide you with insight, counselling and guidance. You will be assigned to a primary training location, and you may also be assigned to different locations for special projects. Following completion of the programme, you will receive meaningful assignments that will allow you to significantly contribute to Sims’ success while continuing to grow professionally.

What you’ll need

To be successful in this challenging position you will:

  • Have or be on course to achieve a 2:1 or above in an Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical), Economics, Manufacturing, Logistics or Operations management degree.
  • Be able to effectively communicate in English.
  • Be a self-starter; able to work independently, accept and expect accountability; open to learning and highly motivated.
  • Know how to earn trust, inspire respect and communicate.
  • Have an inquiring mind, a resourceful approach and able to contribute new ideas.
  • Leverage the strength of a team whilst embracing different perspectives.
  • Have excellent customer service skills complimented by your keen eye for detail and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.

Flexibility is important; you’ll be expected to be geographically mobile as you could be based at any of the sites in the UK across the course of the programme.

What you’ll get

You will be coached and mentored for success, having exposure to a world-class global business. Sims is committed to the personal and professional growth of its employees, so you will also receive access to a variety of learning programmes, online learning tools and resource materials designed to enhance your skills, knowledge and competency.
