Role: Mechanical Engineering Intern
Since joining the internship nearly ten weeks ago, my practical knowledge of a power station has considerably improved. I'm now familiar with the maintenance and operations processes in place at a combined cycle gas turbine power station and have gained a basic understanding of industry as a whole.
My role has involved providing assistance to the engineering team with a number of problems around site as well as trying to solve a couple of problems on my own! Each day was different because of the wide variety of challenges I encountered and as a result of which I was never left with nothing to do!
I found it really useful to complete the shadowing days that were available. It was really interesting to visit the head offices of CE and to see the extent of staff required to run the business. This in turn gave me a better understanding of the company as a whole and the relationship between the power stations and head office.
Real engineering experience is important for standing out from the crowd and as a result of this placement my employability skills have considerably improved. One of the key things I have learnt through the placement is to get stuck in to a task, use your own initiative and not to wait for help to come. I have also learnt to manage myself effectively and to remember that it's important to always look at the big picture to ensure that small things don't get missed out.
My individual performance contract helped me with setting targets for my placement to better understand the business; however the key contribution to my development was gained in the process of working with my manager on specific site problems.
Working in a dynamic environment has significantly helped me to develop my core competencies which has made me focus on improving lots of different aspects of my attitude to work.
I would highly recommend this placement to anyone who wants to work in the engineering industry as it has given me a great introduction to life working as an engineer and has also been constantly interesting and very rewarding.
